Leicester City and Ireland under-21 star Alan Sheehan has been chosen as the ‘Westmeath Independent’ Sports Star of the Month winner for October. The 20 year-old, from Coosan, the son of Michael and Ann Sheehan, is recognised for scoring for Ireland under-21s during a 3-2 victory over Sweden in early October and also for his inclusion in the Irish under-21 side which played Bulgaria in Alan’s home town Athlone last Tuesday week. Sheehan helped Ireland to a memorable 1-0 win in Lissywoollen and received a rapturous welcome from the Athlone crowd on the occasion. Sheehan has established himself as a regular first-team player with English Championship side Leicester City this season, making 19 appearances for the Walker’s Stadium outfit. He also lined out against Chelsea’s millionaires in a recent League Cup meeting at Stamford Bridge. Speaking to the ‘Westmeath Independent’ during his recent visit to Athlone with the Ireland under-21 squad, Sheehan said he was delighted to receive the award and is currently ‘living a dream’ playing professionally for Leicester City. Leicester hired a new manager last week, Ian Holloway, and he has already indicated Sheehan is a major part of his plans by picking him in the starting team for the 2-0 win at Bristol City last Saturday and in Monday’s scoreless draw against Cardiff City. Alan will now go forward to join the other eleven winners in contention for the 2007 Westmeath Independent Sports Star of the Year award, which will be presented at a gala night in the Hodson Bay Hotel on Friday, January 25.
