You got to wonder what this does to team spirit tho, training alongside someone who plays 2 games a season and is the club's top earner.
He's been injured most of this season, as has Walker for example. Injuries can happen to anyone, and over the years Matt's not been an injury-prone player at LCFC at all. Last season he actually played quite a lot of games, but for Ipswich on loan, and was, by all accounts, very good.
The senior players who have made massive contributions to the club
should be the biggest earners, and surely this encourages the lower earners to try and reach their level. What incentive is there for younger players to make a long-term commitment to LCFC if they see the senior players being treated like shit?
Matt earns more in a week than I do in a year - maybe two years. The sickeningly high wages in football are very frustrating for us "men on the street" but that's just the way it is - or was. A few years ago, when the money was there, fans were crying out for our key players to be signed up. Players like Elliot, Lennon, Izzett, Walsh, etc, who could easily have gone to "bigger" or "more fashionable" clubs, were persuaded to stay by being looked after. It made good business sense at the time, and worked well for us when we were doing the business in the Premier and League cup. PT's contract for Matt was stupid, as it was too long and too big for a player of his age, and the bubble was already bursting by then. It was probably done by PT as way to get one over on MON for the sake of PT's over-inflated ego.
But... if we expect players to be committed, we have
got to show the same level of commitment to them. It's hypocritical to demand they be utterly professional at all times, and then act as charity workers when it suits us.
And, as MB said earlier, expect to see something like Big Trev's contract pay off to happen soon - Matt is a good bloke and a loyal servant and if this really is the end of his fantastic City career, he will probably go sooner rather than later. But to expect, nay demand this is unfair and naive.
