Boyce had a second average season in a row, and I suspect will struggle to become a 40+ average player.

If Boyce can up his game to the 30+ level, he will have done well. He still has time to improve his game but currently wouldn't get much of a look in if he was playing for a moderate county side. I don't see him as anything like a 40+ average player - you have to be more than decent to get to that level. I think you will find that a player of the level of Paul Nixon for instance would have a first class average of around 35.

Indeed, I was thinking more like 40+ in the odd season, which a county opener should be capable of during their career.

This morning's Daily Telegraph publishes the full 2009 County Championship Averages.

If anyone has any doubt about our problems then I suggest they take a look.

The batting may be dodgy but the bowling statistics are simply dire. The young bowlers have been slaughtered and the experienced Henderson has had a very poor season indeed - dropping drastically from his previous 'steady' results.

We can't go into competitive matches with 2 or even 3 youngsters who haven't learned their trade and perhaps never will. We are just presenting games to the opposition. I wait with interest to see if the attack will be re-shaped for next season. I realise how very difficult it is for a hard up county like Leicestershire but surely something needs to be done.

Years ago we would be first in for an ex England bowler who was looking for a new challenge and to extend his career for a few more years...

Anyone for Matthew Hoggard....

I think that is exactly right. He would have been just our sort of player......years ago. He is valuable because he isn't going to be away playing anymore international games - those days have gone for him.

However, I think he would still want a serious salary which I assume would be too much and wouldn't fit with any wages structure at Grace Road.

That said, Andrew McDonald can't be cheap.
