Is there an option to disable peoples Avatars from coming up at work as some of these are unsafe (but lovely:icon_bigg)?

You could use the 'Mobile' skin, from the style chooser drop-down menu, bottom left.

Or you could go proper stealth mode with Ghostzilla

You are concerned that your boss might see a tiny picture of a girl's bum, but not bothered that he/she might see that the rest of the screen is filled with a football forum!

I can't think of anyones avatar being considered unsafe for work given that children can buy the Sun.

It wouldn't make a difference if children were allowed buy hardcore porn, that still wouldn't affect what some might consider 'work' safe.
Especially if they don't work with children.
