if England got World Cup 2018, would there be a game at the Walkers?

Germany 2006 has 12 stadia, but hang on, England's are better and we could use many more, how many more? let's say 3 for each group, 18

as i remember there was a game in Euro 1996 at F*r*st?

top stadia:-

1) Wembley 90000
2) Olympic Stadium 80000
3) Old Trafford 68,936 Manchester United Expanding to 75,000 in 2006
4) St James' Park 52,387 Newcastle United
5) City of Manchester Stadium 48,500 Manchester City
6) Stadium of Light 48,300 Sunderland
7) Anfield 45,522 Liverpool
8) Villa Park 43,300 Aston Villa
9) Stamford Bridge 42,449 Chelsea
10) Elland Road 40,242 Leeds United
11) Goodison Park 40,103 Everton
12) Hillsborough Stadium 39,859 Sheffield Wednesday
13) Arsenal Stadium (Highbury) 38,500 Arsenal (Ashburton Grove in 2006, 60000)
14) White Hart Lane 36,240 Tottenham Hotspur
15) Upton Park 35,647 West Ham United
16) Riverside Stadium 35,049 Middlesbrough
17) Pride Park Stadium 33,597 Derby County
18) St Mary's Stadium 32,800 Southampton
19) Walkers Stadium 32,500 Leicester City
20) Ricoh Arena 32,000 Coventry City
21) Ewood Park 31,367 Blackburn Rovers
22) Bramall Lane 30,936 Sheffield United
23) City Ground 30,602 Nottingham Forest
24) Portman Road 30,300 Ipswich Town
25) St Andrews Stadium 30,016 Birmingham City

hmmm...

would they play a game in the olympic stadium, would they bother using White Hart Lane, Upton Park, Goodison?

white hart lane is a good stadium, but i hope for our reputation they don't use goodison. unless the usual amount of money gets pumped into the cup stadiums for improvements. it depends on how poor of countries qualify, they might consider the walkers for a very poor game. i remember when st james park looked a reasonable size and they got a bulgaria game.

Surely by that time clubs will have new Grounds,I know Everton are already looking for a new home.

you would think they would. but everton have been looking for a decade or something. they might get relegated and then who knows.

In the rules of holding competitons, FIFA do not like having two venues in one city. So Manchester and Liverpool would only have one stadium, London might get away with two. Olympic Stadium is set to descaled after the Olympics to a 35k Athletics stadium. We could expand to 40,000. Hillsborough and Goodinson despite their capacities would no longer put up to FIFA regualtions for World Cup criteria. Decent chance of us getting a couple of games but if the World Cup is annouced, you see a few cities and clubs suddenly start building stadiums for it.

By the way Germany' stadia at a top level is a lot more better than the current number of McStadium being built in England (i.e. Walkers Stadium)

cheers Hazz, you know your stuff

i see the one-stadium-per-city rule is in force for 2006, it'd be a bit harsh excluding Ashburton Grove or the City of Manchester Stadium, but that nicely rules out Upton Park, White Hart Lane, St Andrews, Stamford Bridge, Goodison and the downsized Olympic stadium. Wonder how flexible FIFA are on that...

i take it it's the FA who select the grounds under FIFA guidelines?

I know its very harsh about the one-stadium-per city. I could see London get two though in the same way Paris got two for the 1998 World Cup, the Stade De France is in St-Denis (a suburb of Paris) in many ways a similar situation to Wembley to London. So we could affectly have Wembley and Ashburton Grove. I think FA provisionally pick the grounds.

But for example take the instance Bristol City Council (using World Cup money) decide to build a ground for its two football teams and rugby union team. A 40,000 stadium with no other footballing city near it holding a game, this could create a possibly a venue.

So lets look at it like this
1) Wembley 90000
3) Old Trafford 68,936 Manchester United Expanding to 75,000 in 2006
4) St James' Park 52,387 Newcastle United
5) City of Manchester Stadium 48,500 Manchester City
6) Stadium of Light 48,300 Sunderland
7) Anfield 45,522 Liverpool
8) Villa Park 43,300 Aston Villa
10) Elland Road 40,242 Leeds United
13) Arsenal Stadium (Highbury) 38,500 Arsenal (Ashburton Grove in 2006, 60000)
16) Riverside Stadium 35,049 Middlesbrough
17) Pride Park Stadium 33,597 Derby County
18) St Mary's Stadium 32,800 Southampton
19) Walkers Stadium 32,500 Leicester City

There's 13 stadiums but one of Derby and Leicester, Middlesborough and Sunderland to miss out. Plus the possiblity of CoMS missing out. That leaves 10 stadiums with 2 new stadiums taking place.

Bristol, MK Dons' New Stadium, Hull maybe?, even Brighton's new ground.
We'll wait and see, we'll have a decent chance anyway.

hmmm

where did 12 come from?

the German FA or FIFA? the Germans I expect

and it's 32 teams now, but that looks likely to move to 36

and Japan/South Korea had 16. but was there special consideration for it being in two countries

1) Wembley 90000
2) Olympic Stadium 80000

10) Walkers Stadium 32,500 Leicester City
11) Ricoh Arena 32,000 Coventry City

Olympic Stadium and Chelsea are not feasible.

we ruled out stamford bridge:-

1) Wembley 90000
2) Old Trafford 68,936 Manchester United Expanding to 75,000 in 2006
3) Ashburton Grove 60000 Arsenal
4) St James' Park 52,387 Newcastle United
5) City of Manchester Stadium 48,500 Manchester City (may be ruled out because of same city rule)
6) Stadium of Light 48,300 Sunderland
7) Anfield 45,522 Liverpool
8) Villa Park 43,300 Aston Villa
9) Elland Road 40,242 Leeds United
10) Hillsborough Stadium 39,859 Sheffield Wednesday
11) Riverside Stadium 35,049 Middlesbrough
12) Pride Park Stadium 33,597 Derby County
13) St Mary's Stadium 32,800 Southampton
14) Walkers Stadium 32,500 Leicester City
15) Ricoh Arena 32,000 Coventry City
16) Ewood Park 31,367 Blackburn Rovers
17) City Ground 30,602 Nottingham Forest
18) Portman Road 30,300 Ipswich Town

what criteria do Hillsborough, Ewood and all the older grounds need Hazz? i thought they'd be eligible...?

14th then, with anything from 12 to 20 to pick!

I think Hillsborough and Ewood are eligible but they need some updating. Ewood needs to knock his old terrible stand, plus its a town not far from Manchester. Hillsborough would be okay but needs a clean-up in the interior of the stadium.

Just realised aswell you must be 32k (I think) to hold a World Cup match. Remember the Walkers can increase to 40k.

no it's 40,000 minimum

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/soccer/events/1998/worldcup/news/1999/02/08/germany_2006/

that changes everything

that means the Walkers will have to upgrade and it rules out a lot

1) Wembley 90000
2) Old Trafford 68,936 Manchester United Expanding to 75,000 in 2006
3) Ashburton Grove 60000 Arsenal
4) St James' Park 52,387 Newcastle United
5) City of Manchester Stadium 48,500 Manchester City (may be ruled out because of same city rule)
6) Stadium of Light 48,300 Sunderland
7) Anfield 45,522 Liverpool
8) Villa Park 43,300 Aston Villa
9) Elland Road 40,242 Leeds United
10) Hillsborough Stadium 39,859 Sheffield Wednesday
11) Walkers Stadium 32,500 Leicester City (40,000 after upgrade)

can St Mary's, Pride Park, the Ricoh and the Riverside similarly upgrade?

no wonder there's only 12 in Germany!!

Arsenal - Emirates Stadium - est 60,000
Aston Villa - Villa Park - 42,573 (planned expansion to 51,000)
Liverpool - Stanley Park Stadium - est 61,000
Manchester City - City of Manchester Stadium - 48,000
Manchester United - Old Trafford - 68190 (could be expanded to 95,000+)
Newcastle United - St James' Park - 52,316 (could be expanded to 65,000+)
Sunderland - Stadium of Light - 48,300 (planned expansion to 64,000)
Leeds United - Elland Road - 40,204 (needs alot of updating, could be 50,000+)
Sheffield Wednesday/United - new shared stadium - est 40,000
Wembley Stadium - est 90,000
Bristol City/Rovers - new shared stadium - est 40,000
Hull City - KC Stadium - could be expanded to 40,000

Thats some list someone suggested. I would replace the Bristol and Hull with Leicester/Derby and Southampton.

I remember as well Liverpool will be playing at New Anfield by then with a capacity of 60k.
