I think the man is worthy of a thread of his own.

So... Dylan fans....

1) What are your favourite albums? I've long considered this but think I'm actually pretty well settled on the following top 5:

Blonde on Blonde
Time out of Mind
Blood on the Tracks
Bringing It All Back Home
Good As I Been to You (yes, really)

2) Anyone enjoy the recent film 'I'm Not There'? I thought it was rubbish, but I'm difficult to please.

3) Anyone see Dylan when he first toured UK and came to Leicester? That must have been amazing. It was the tour he first played electric - JUDAS/Play f**king loud etc. I've seen him five times now, but each time he's been worse.

The last time I saw him was at the Hop Farm Festival which is a couple of miles from where I live. It was like listening to his greatest hits but with each member of the band playing at a different speed and in a different key and without him being loud enough. Complete disinterest. He also apparently refused to let them show close ups of him on the screens due to some image rights or vanity thing. Nob. (Sorry Bob).

I think that's it for me and Bob, live music wise.

I'd love to meet the man though. I know it can be a let down to meet your heroes, but I would still genuinely love to meet him, so if anyone can fix it up for me.... :038:

Beats talking about Paulo Sousa and his gang of not-so-merry muppets anyway.

Travelling Wilburys ftw.

You can't beat the Zimmerman in his pomp.

1:

1. Blood on the Tracks
2. Highway 61 Revisited
3. The Times They Are A-Changing
4. Bringing it All Back Home
5. Another Side of Bob Dylan

2: Not seen it. Keep meaning too, Todd Haynes is a great director.

3: Never seen him live.

My mate had Bob Dylans 'Blowing In The Wind' song at his funeral. Ever since that day its been one of my favourite songs of all time.

Favourite album = Blood on the Tracks, esp Idiot Wind
Second = toss up between blonde on blonde and highway 61 revisited and bringing it all back home

I love Dylan although my girlfriend hates him so only listen to it every now and then. God damn music nazis!

I listened to Bringing it all Back Home last night whilst going through a load of paperwork and chucking away boxes and boxes of old bills, statements, study stuff etc. Thoroughly enjoyable evening.

I followed it up with Leonard Cohen - New Skin for Old Ceremony which brought productivity to a halt and some red winey reflection in to play.

2 of my all-time favourite albums. BIBH is obviously a known classic, but New Skin... is so under-rated.

my feeling is there is general gender split when it comes to liking Bob Dylan, although I only have anecdotal evidence :102:

No, I'm definitely a male that thinks he's a talentless ****

Always preferred Neil Young personally, but don't mind some of his stuff.

Things have changed, which is a fairly newish song for him, is my favourite Dylan song.

"Darkness at the break of noon
Shadows even the silver spoon
The handmade blade, the child’s balloon
Eclipses both the sun and moon
To understand you know too soon
There is no sense in trying

Pointed threats, they bluff with scorn
Suicide remarks are torn
From the fool’s gold mouthpiece the hollow horn
Plays wasted words, proves to warn
That he not busy being born is busy dying

Temptation’s page flies out the door
You follow, find yourself at war
Watch waterfalls of pity roar
You feel to moan but unlike before
You discover that you’d just be one more
Person crying

So don’t fear if you hear
A foreign sound to your ear
It’s alright, Ma, I’m only sighing

As some warn victory, some downfall
Private reasons great or small
Can be seen in the eyes of those that call
To make all that should be killed to crawl
While others say don’t hate nothing at all
Except hatred

Disillusioned words like bullets bark
As human gods aim for their mark
Make everything from toy guns that spark
To flesh-colored Christs that glow in the dark
It’s easy to see without looking too far
That not much is really sacred

While preachers preach of evil fates
Teachers teach that knowledge waits
Can lead to hundred-dollar plates
Goodness hides behind its gates
But even the president of the United States
Sometimes must have to stand naked

An’ though the rules of the road have been lodged
It’s only people’s games that you got to dodge
And it’s alright, Ma, I can make it

Advertising signs they con
You into thinking you’re the one
That can do what’s never been done
That can win what’s never been won
Meantime life outside goes on
All around you

You lose yourself, you reappear
You suddenly find you got nothing to fear
Alone you stand with nobody near
When a trembling distant voice, unclear
Startles your sleeping ears to hear
That somebody thinks they really found you

A question in your nerves is lit
Yet you know there is no answer fit
To satisfy, insure you not to quit
To keep it in your mind and not forget
That it is not he or she or them or it
That you belong to

Although the masters make the rules
For the wise men and the fools
I got nothing, Ma, to live up to

For them that must obey authority
That they do not respect in any degree
Who despise their jobs, their destinies
Speak jealously of them that are free
Cultivate their flowers to be
Nothing more than something they invest in

While some on principles baptized
To strict party platform ties
Social clubs in drag disguise
Outsiders they can freely criticize
Tell nothing except who to idolize
And then say God bless him

While one who sings with his tongue on fire
Gargles in the rat race choir
Bent out of shape from society’s pliers
Cares not to come up any higher
But rather get you down in the hole
That he’s in

But I mean no harm nor put fault
On anyone that lives in a vault
But it’s alright, Ma, if I can’t please him

Old lady judges watch people in pairs
Limited in sex, they dare
To push fake morals, insult and stare
While money doesn’t talk, it swears
Obscenity, who really cares
Propaganda, all is phony

While them that defend what they cannot see
With a killer’s pride, security
It blows the minds most bitterly
For them that think death’s honesty
Won’t fall upon them naturally
Life sometimes must get lonely

My eyes collide head-on with stuffed
Graveyards, false gods, I scuff
At pettiness which plays so rough
Walk upside-down inside handcuffs
Kick my legs to crash it off
Say okay, I have had enough, what else can you show me?

And if my thought-dreams could be seen
They’d probably put my head in a guillotine
But it’s alright, Ma, it’s life, and life only"

Christ, I love that song. :)

I disagree but it was made me play 'holding on to you' which is no bad thing!

I'm sure you'll disagree, but I think the Terence Trent D'Arby version is better.

Just listening to it. Wouldn't say it's as good as the original, but it is definitely a good cover, made the song his own which is always a good sign of a cover.

X Factor favourite saying :icon_lol:

:icon_lol: I realised that when I said it. What I meant though was not that they put their own spin on the vocals, but that it was a completely different backing music, tune and even melody, only the lyrics were really the same.

I shall henceforth refer to you as Louis Walsh haha :)

I love 'Desire'. But probably feel 'Bringing it all Back Home' should be my fave, or 'Blood on the Tracks', or 'Blonde on Blonde', or, or, or...

Still prefer Neil though, personally.
