I don’t have an Athletic subscription but here are a few faves off the top of my head;

Take a deep breath, as club supremos spend “silly money” in “silly season” in an attempt to bring a transfer saga to an end just before the window slams shut, only for their swoop to hit a snag or a stumbling block before the dreaded snub from a player for whom there would be no shortage of suitors if he decides to make a switch.
