Expecting Errikson to come in and suddenly take us on a ten game winning streak reminds me of that property programe Grand Designs. Basically if they buy an attractive old house that needs some work, but find that the foundations have been in some way underminded, they don't just plonk a new roof on top and say 'ta-dah!'. They spend time and money (both) making sure that the fundamentals are correct before applying the finishing and usually more costly touches that bring it all together. This normally results in things running behind schedule in order to be just right.
In exactly the same way - Sven can't plonk Michael Owen up front with Steve Howard when we haven't yet solved the problem of who within our defense and midfield is really up to the job of taking the club forward.
Morrisson, ,Nielsen, Berner, Wellens, Dyer, Howard, Fryatt, Waghorn, Lamey, Abe, Moreno, Gallagher have all shown significant defects of either pace, finishing, passing or positioning this year - and only 3 to 4 of the above list will (I believe) survive the cut by the end of the year. They got us promoted, but if they are constantly outpaced, outjumped, outfought and/or outscored by their opposite numbers they need to go to clubs with less ambition, where their hit and miss qualities will measure up.
Meanwhile - although plunging city into the moral lowground of over inflated wage bill to turnover ratio - I for one can't wait until the average quality of our starting eleven makes us all realise that constant arguments about wellens vs oakley or howard vs fryatt are really just arguments over shades of disappointing grey. None of them are the answer. The day that a sven centre forward takes a pass from midfield knocks it wide and then has the pace and class to get on the end of a quality ball into the middle we'll realise the slim pickings of quality that we've been mired in for years.
Viva the svenolution.
