How Keith Weller would have loved todays pitches and the protection given by modern referees. It is easy to forget that Keith often played on mud against defenders who got away with quite brutal methods.

Incidentally I do not think the two goals on YouTube are actually his best. Weller scored a goal in a pre-season friendly away against Forest that I think was even better. (Imagine having a pre-season against Forest with unsegregated fans these days but I felt perfectly safe among the Forest fans). Sadly being a friendly there were no TV cameras there.

Leicester had two superb wingers in Glover and Weller. One difference was that Glover seemed to need people around him to play well (especially Rofe) whereas Keith Weller could play well when the rest of the team had a bad day. In my forty odd years of watching Leicester he was the best player to watch. There was a stir among the crowd the moment Weller got the ball that I have not known with any other Leicester player. The best Leicester player I have ever seen was Peter Shilton but my favourite was Keith Weller.

What a wonderful thing YouTube is. People born after Keith finished playing can see just how good he was.

Similarly, Peter Shilton always claims the best save he ever made was one from Lenny Glover in training. Must be annoying as a footballer when the best moment of your career happens in a meaningless game with now one watching.

I never saw him play live but my dad and grandad made me aware of his hero status. I love watching proper football from years ago. Mud, proper kits, players that were the lifeblood of their team. RIP Keith.

If I were susceptible, this would make me feel old. :icon_conf

I was at the Norwich game featured in the video above. Weller was my favourite City player then and is still my all time City favourite as you can tell from my choice of Avatar.

My Dad's City hero. Wasn't a fan of Wortho. Grandad's Rowley!!

Reckons only Izzet comes close to being worthy.

RIP Keith

My dad always rates Dave Gibson as the best player he ever saw, closely followed by Gordon Banks. My granddad says Sep Smith. Both regard the team under Matt Gillies in the early 60s, particularly the 1962/63 season as the best ever City side.

I notice Gibson in particular gets talked about in absolute awe by fans of a certain age, but for some reason seems to have been forgotten a bit in City folklore.

Remember an open day at Filbo back in the 70's. We fans were allowed in the dressing room after the players had put on a practice match and Keith signed me an autograph whilst dressed in his full kit with one of his kids on his knee.

Made a lasting impression on me that did.

RIP.

before marriage and kids, my proudest moment was season 73/74 fa cup replay v fulham. (those of you as ancient as me will remember it as mullery scored goal of the season on the saturday). i was mascot and keith was captain. heady days ................... what a player. like to see some of the modern day players dribbling on those pitches.

There was a nostalgia for Gibson (and Mike Stringfellow) while they were still playing. When I saw Gibson and Stringfellow play they were a shadow of their former selves but even when they played badly they were forgiven. The Leicester Mercury reporter was very much an admirer of Gibson and criticized Frank O'Farrell for apparently never knowing whether to play him or not. After Gibson had left I attended a talk in 1971 in which O'Farrell complained about this and say that whether Gibson had played depended on the state of the pitch; he was no good in mud. Clearly this was not true of Davie Gibson at his peak.

Out of the Gillies Bloomfield and MON sides the 73/74 team was the best IMO and I've seen them all!!!! - It has often been said by former team members and the like that if we had signed another 2 or 3 top players that we would have been a top 3 team such was the quality of Keith Weller and others - £100,000 - what would he cost today?

Hard to imagine that Leicester actually broke the British transfer fee record back then! Wasn't it £120,000 for David Nish?

No, it was for Alan Clarke.

Derby signed Nish from Leicester for a British record transfer fee.

Bit mixed up there, still we broke the record :)

What about, Alan Clarke to Wayne Clarke, one extreme to another!
Remember the pic of Wayne in the wheelbarrow? Should've taken him straight to the tip :)
