It has been an interesting summer. It is tempting to get excited about some potentially good recruitment. However, I can't help feeling that the key word in that sentence is 'potentially'.

We've got so many ifs and buts this season. Lots of unproven recruits and an increased reliance on proven erratic performers. So our season could be better than I'm predicting but it could also be worse.

I fear that we're hoping that some players come good or improve. That is very risky in the cut and thrust of the Premier League. Lots of other teams seem to me to be better balanced. Our theoretical rivals such as Everton and West Ham appear to have made safer signings.

To keep it simple, we've lost guaranteed goals and assists (Mahrez) and replaced them with hope. Maddison could turn out to be a new 'Gazza' type superstar. Drifting away from challenges and threading balls to gleeful strikers. He could also be clattered quickly and muscled out of games. He could lose his confidence a bit and then become decidedly ordinary. Then what have we got?

I fear for Vardy this season. He's been carrying that groin injury for months and he's due a major injury or disrupted season. What if he misses half the season? Where is our goal threat against good opposition then?

I also think that Maguire may be heading for an ordinary season. He improved massively as last season went on from being a bit of a liability early on, to becoming a key performer. Often the trajectory stalls or slips backwards, especially with all the England/Man Utd fuss.

And then we have a manager who has re-shaped his backroom team. I will judge him on this season's decisions, performances and results, but I'm far from optimistic.

Of all the signings, the last two defenders added excite me most. They could be excellent. If we're wise enough to develop and integrate them, we will be okay.

That’s a longer version of what I was trying to say.

Mahrez leaving was inevitable and made us weaker.

Signings look promising but it’s unknown until we start playing how it will pan out.
