"to toss" is the infinitive: which, like the present participle, is a form of the verb

True but the distinction is subtle as in normal usage when referring to a verb we do, as you point out, refer to the infinitive form of that verb.
To take this argument to the logical conclusion, I was in fact wrong to correct Alex as any form of the verb is also the verb. My apologies. :icon_sad:
Indeed how can one refer to a verb without alluding to a particular form. In OO terms we would be talking an abstract Class and a concrete implementation.
