I've found that homebrew stout tends to be pretty good, Young's make a good one. Ps ignore anyone that says not to bother with homebrew because it's disgusting - they're just not making it properly. Stick to the instructions and it will be fine.

i remember making 80 pints of tom caxton's lager for a party over 20 years ago. Tasted ok and got finished off, although what don't you drink when you're 17? met a lovely lady from granborough, susie was her name....happy days

That's what we used. Any other tips you can give mate?

I made home brew for over 20 years, back in the days when canned extract was...(and in my opinion, still is, pretty rank.) I bought a cheap, manual grinder, Two other friends contributed towards buying a sack of malted barley. This weighed 50 kg. Every time we went to Canada Malting in Toronto to pick it up, we met the same Scottish foreman who always said: "Whit are ye gaing to use this for?" He either had a very dry sense of humour, or....
I bought hop flowers online...(word of warning..never order 5lbs., it will pretty well fill a chest freezer!) The process of grinding the barley, usually 1 lb per gallon, straining, sparging, (rinsing the barley with hot water), and boiling the strained liquid, (wort) with the hops, straining and siphoning into a fermentation container, cooling and adding yeast, sounds like a hell of a lot of work, but the results are far superior to extract brews that have a distinctive "tang", and also to the majority of commercial brews.
I only stopped when I moved into a condo, where space is at a premium.
If you need any other info., or advice, please feel free to pm me
