Fully agree Highland, our squad is very short in quality when you look at the wide players. Down the left we have no recognised out and out left back, we have a one dimensional left midifelder (Tiatto) and 2 relatively untried kids (Porter & Sheehan). On the right we have one winger (Sylla) who is clearly on his way out of the club, another who wasnt deemed good enough for the bench (Low) and a right back who is playing out of position (Maybury).

So IMO we are currently going into games with 3 out of the 4 wide berths filled with potential weaknesses. We need to play to our strengths and that strength is undoubtedly through the spine of the team. We have to revert to a 3 - 5 - 2 formation because we don't have the resources available to effectively compete when we go with a 4 - 4 - 2.

Hume could be that attacking Midfielder thus allowing O'Grady to play upfront with Fryatt.

I don't think we should be attempting to play with wingers because it seems we have no left winger and our right ones don't appear good enough unless Low's pre season form is misleading. However i think Rk will persevere with 4-4-2

Ah, that I do agree with. I also agree with the fact that RK will continue with 4-4-2 though and that's why I was saying about taking Maybury out to put Low/Sylla/Hammond/O'Grady in..

I do think the players we've got would be more suited to 3-5-2 though

We could have

Kisnorbo, McCarthy, Kenton
Stearman ----------------- Sheehan
Williams, Johnson, Weso/Hughes
Fryatt, Hume

I think the 3 centre backs would be strong enough for us to play the more attacking full backs (Stearman and Sheehan) rather than the defensive ones (Maybury and Tiatto), especially with AJ and Weso in the midfield to help out a bit with defence. Could even put Hume in midfield instead of Hughes/Williams and have O'Grady up front..

But, I don't think RK will change from the 4-4-2, and in fairness to him, how many teams have been successful in this league recently playing anything other than 4-4-2? Hardly any managers use 3-5-2s anymore... And while we don't have wingers, we don't particularly have wing backs either, although the players we do have may be slightly better than on the wing but we don't actually know that would be the case.

But not many of the teams who have been successful in this division playing 4-4-2 have done so by playing negatively with full backs as wingers and effectively centre halves at full back.

What I don't understand that if RK is intent on playing 4-4-2 with two wingers then why didn't he get 2 in instead of what he did.He knew he had a problem on the left when he got Welsh in on loan but then didn't fill the position close season.Ok he got Low but he decided he wasn't worthy of a place on the bench today...strange indeed.
We are extremely short of options on the left yet he didn't get one left footed player in.

If were to continue playing the ineffective 4-4-2, i think perhaps this would be the best line up.

Henderson
Kenton
Kisnorbo
McCarthy
Christ knows for left back
Christ knows for right mid(Maybury is so shit!)
Williams
Johnson(Better improve from today)

Infact im gonna stop there, i'm just so depressed by the crapiness of today that i can't go on.

Spot on H, and why didnt he use the pre season to try a couple of other formations so we could at least have a Plan B and maybe even a Plan C, at present we appear to have Plan A without the correct components to even play that system and the current alternative is Plan A with a couple of substitutes like for like.

Which involves playing the different faces out of position:icon_conf
