Are you seriously telling me that just because some of them have played let's say, conservatively, 5 hours of football in ten days, a bit of travelling and a bit of training - that they really shouldn't be expected to take a set-piece?

Perhaps you're right, but that would worry me.
I forgot to mention that the team had a 12-hour trip from Sweden to Austria the day before the game.

But yeah, you're right, maybe I should start to expect football players to act as superhuman beings, too.

I don't get this "flapping" criticism at goalkeepers, honestly. It was the same with Ricardo, but he never conceded one goal due to it. A lot of it is just the goalkeeper imposing himself on the opposition's attack. If he actually concedes a goal, then fine, the criticism is deserved, but otherwise, I don't see what the problem is.

Schmeichel had a good game today for me.

Correctamundo.

Many of our fans would be howling abuse at Cech or Reina if we had either of them in goal because they do much the same thing. It is the way of the modern keeper and it is extremely rare that a goal results. The most common outcome is the keeper effectively 'shooing' away the threat.

Stockholm > Munich > 6hr bus ride to Villach. There was a problem in Munich with the freight that had all their kit was temporarily lost. In total they were travelling for 14 odd hours.

The players would have had less than 7 hours sleep from playing the previous night.

Had it been organised properly, they could have flown via Stansted direct in to Klagenfurt and saved approx 5 hours on travelling.

My assumption was that the Management arranged this on purpose. It's not like they couldn't afford the shorter route. This ten day trip is about three things; preparation, publicity and team spirit. Sven will know what sort of impact that journey would have on the squad and must have believed it would do them good to travel together for that length of time.

The highlight from this game for me was that it was the first game for Mills, he's made captain and we keep a clean sheet. Hopefully, a sign of things to come.

The only player who really needs to pull his finger out is Waghorn. We're in the process of recruiting one or two goalscorers. Waghorn's only chance of staying would be for him to score some goals preseason but so far he appears to be the same player as 2010/11 rather than the one from 2009/10. I was hoping he'd be on fire this preseason to try to keep a place in the squad.

Clearly remember Ricardo punching a cross onto Nugent's foot last season led to a goal. It doesn't nothing but dent a defenders confidence in their keeper.

Difficult to disagree that its a negative thing when goals are conceded as a result, but I don't see the Chelsea defence losing any confidence in Cech - and he often flaps and punches.

A point was raised earlier that a lot of 'modern' keepers seem to do this to shoo away threats.

Where we struggled often with Ricardo's punching and flapping was that we always seemed slow to mop up the second ball and complete the clearance/assert meaningful possession ourselves.

David De Gea likes to punch as well, just so you know, so presumably we can expect to see United's defence up in arms any time now?

When we say "flaps" does that mean he doesn't connect?

Because I don't see any problem with a keeper flapping/punching the ball away.

If he's going up and missing it completely then yeah its a problem!

Even if by doing it he stops the attacker getting to it? Or at least puts him off?

So Rab Douglas punching the ball direct to a strikers feet on several occasions was good because he connected with the ball?

Actually, it was Sol that did a pathetic clearing header straight to Nugent.
Ricardo came to punch, but Sol got their first.
If you are going to blame him for something, make sure he's guilty first!

Are you Alan Young in disguise?

Well if he missed it or didn't call for it and was caught off his line, it makes him even more guilty of poor goalkeeping.

I can say as a centre-back playing weekly, it does your confidence no good. If we're talking biggest clubs in the country, it slightly changes things. As you go down the division, the emphasis is more on safety first.

I'd also suggest that Chelsea don't have much confidence in Cech given the number of times he's collided with Terry. De Gea will be the same initially.

The main thing what stood for me when Schmeichel missed a cross last night was that he gave up on the 'second ball' and it luckily hit Mills back into his direction.

.

Well, as a centreback you should know more than most that when clearing the ball with your head you head it away from the goal and get as much distance as possible on the ball.
You don't head the ball down the middle, to the edge of the box.
That's whether your goalie calls for it or not, you do your job properly first then give the keeper rocks.
Also, it was a very good finish from Nugent (hopefully we'll see plenty of this coming season)

But hey, the defender fecked up, striker finished well, must have been Ricardo's fault

I'm certain Sven will have a few irons in the fire in that regard.

IMO, surely it'd be better to pay the reported fee of around 2.5 million and agree to Yak's wages rather than pay around 5 million for Maynard?

Obviously I'd be happy with either player, but it'd be nice to get whoever comes in some game time before the start of the new season

Your first point was my biggest moan about Hobbs and Brown under Pearson the pair of them never directed their headers.

The fact remains Ricardo was out of position on it after being nowhere near a long throw-in. He should have screamed off it.
