Can't access certain websites

Hi, I have a strange problem (I think) that I've never experienced before.

A week or so ago, a few of the websites that I visit frequently stopped working. Facebook, Gmail, Hotmail etc. For example, I can go to Facebook's front page, but when I try to log in an error appears. Gmail and Hotmail I can't even get that far. The site just keeps loading and eventually I get the "The site took to long to respond, the session has timed out" error. But most other sites work fine, Talking Balls being of one of them as you can see.

I use Mozilla Firefox, which I have reinstalled, but the same websites won't work in Internet Explorer either! I haven't changed any settings as far as I'm aware.

These sites do however work on my iPad, which is on the same network.

Being someone who has worked for IBM IT support, this is slightly embarrassing (working there was slightly embarrassing in itself but nevermind that) so I hope you can help me out here...

What's the error message that Facebook throws up and what OS are you using?

Trying to log in, it keeps "connecting":

Then it times out:

Windows 7.

It's the same error message for the other sites. Keeps connecting but no response.

I had the problem a few years ago when no secure sites worked. Can't remember how I fixed it though. Sorry!

Ah, okay, but that makes a bit of sense then. Just checked with my banking etc and they are not working either.

Will spend the night googling...

No, it's an Irish one. But everything was working fine here in the UK as well only up until a week ago!

Did you change anything? Installed new software? What way are you connecting?

Hmm, no, not that I can think of. Would that potentially be a problem if I did?

I'm not using any antivirus and I've tried with the Windows Firewall turned off as well.

Normally, no, tried with one now and that works. Thanks for the tip, hadn't thought about that.

Ah, I'm in no panic anyway as I can still get in on my iPad, but if you stumble across a solution somewhere, feel free to tell me. Thanks again.

Just read a couple of reports of it doing so. Something to do with the site's Security System having a problem with the system time that it was expecting to find on the user's machine
