City Reserves 4 Sheffield United Reserves 1

An opener from on-trial Yanna Kermorgant, a strike by defender Tom Parkes and a DJ Campbell double gave City Reserves a convincing win over their Bramall Lane counterparts in the totesport.com Cup group game at the Walkers Stadium tonight.

City had the game finished as a contest by the break, grabbing the initiative right away, Campbell having a shot saved in the opening moments and indeed City grabbed the opener in only the 6th minute, Campbell bursting down the right for a cut-back turned home clinically by Kermorgant.

It was a great start for City but they had to make a change when midfielder Robert Burns was led off with an arm injury, Ben Milnes replacing him.

City then stretched their lead in the 19th minute when a Gradel corner from the left landed perfectly at the feet of defender Parkes who blasted the ball home in the heart of the area.

It was all one way and a cross from left back Ibrahima Faye saw a Kermorgant header well saved. Moments later, an Ashley Chambers effort was cleared off the line before, in the 31st minute, Campbell turned the ball home from close range after superb trickery from Gradel, working his way in from the left.

Just before the break, it was a fourth for the home side, a superb through pass from Kermorgant sending Cambell clear for his second of the night.

That is how it stood at the interval and for the second half Levi Porter replaced Cambell.

City almost picked up where they left off as, early in the half, Chambers got through only to send his shot wide and then came an ominous sign as the visitors hit the woodwork.

Indeed, in the 68th minute they did score, Liban Abdi shooting home but it proved only a consolation, the visitors ending with ten men, ex-City loanee Lee Hendrie coming off injured when they had already used all their substitutes to complete a sorry night for them.

City Reserves: Cisak; O'Neill, Rowe-Turner, Parkes, Faye, Chambers, Burns, Ajdarevic, Gradel, Campbell, Kermorgant. Subs: Sappleton, Ambrusics, Porter (46 for Campbell), Milnes (17 for Burns), C King (66 for Kermorgant).

Sheffield United: Haber, Brown, Fortune, James, Roe, Abdi, Fotheringham, Hendrie, Carney, Foster, Carole. Subs: Ahmadi (77 for Carole), Billard, Maguire (61 for Fortune), Chappell, Williams (58 for Foster).

Referee: D Drysdale.

"for the second half Levi Porter replaced Cambell."

If he did not let him stay on for a possible hat-trick, it is either sheer spite or Pearson is resting DJ for Saturday.

I actually went down for this and enjoyed the match - not bad at all for a fiver. Dj did look very good and very sharp - not one offside flag for him all night! His goals weren't spectacular but he could definitely do a job while our first choice strikers are out.

The whole side performed well, Kermorgant looked ok, but if people are hoping he'll take on the Steve Howard role they'll be disappointed. He won a few headers and flick ons, but he doesn't look like he has the strength to hold up the ball like Howard does. on the plus side he seems to have good positional awareness and a good touch.

The other trialist at left back (Faye?) looked pretty solid - couldn't really tell how well he'd do in the Champ after seeing him against such poor opposition though.

There are a few others who deserve a mention too;

O'Neill - looked solid as ever at right back, good tackling and distribution.

Chambers - was fast, quite skillful but lacked final product - looked better after being moved from the wing to up front.

Gradel - played like he always does - very quick, very aggressive, beat players easily and slogged his guts out, but he doesn't seem to know when to release the final ball and when he did, it wasn't fantastic.

Ajdarevic - looked very skillful and was a real handful at times. Looked very comfortable in central midfield and his distribution was good. I think he'd suffer in the Champ though, he looks like he could be bullied off the ball quite easily and wouldn't have the time on the ball to do anything meaningful with it.

These lads are a way off pushing our starters for places, but they look more than capable of doing a job, and if any of them were on the subs bench or starting as temporary cover I wouldn't be too worried. Tonight really reinforced my opinion that we've got a very good balanced squad here.

only played until half time, so taken off due to:

a) Impressed scouting manager made bid

b) Save him for Barnsley game

... you decide

A. It's always going to be something like A. B is NEVER doing to happen. Campbell is never going to play in the City first team.

Campbell looked very lively last night but the Sheffield team was very poor.

Parkes looked very effective and Rowe Turner had a good game for the first time when ive watched him.

Totally agree with comments on Gradel, if he learns when and how to release that final ball he'd be in the first team more.

Faye looked like a Prem defender in physique but little else.

Chambers looked rusty and should have had at least on goal but created quite a bit.

I thought Adjarevic looked poor, passes astray and knocked off the ball easily. Looked exactly how he'd looked in his sub appearances to me.

Porter was the worst ive seen him, played a couple of hospital passes.

Quite impressed with Cormorant/Kermit/Kermagrant/Ya. He didnt look as strong as Howard but looked far better on the ball. Controlled it far quicker, was much more agile, able to really change his body shape in mid jump to direct the headers rather than just get his head in the way and hope for the best. He also had a turn of pace and a decent shot on him and good vision and application with his through balls.

Feed the Cormorant and he will score!!!

Basically, Get Yann and DJ in the squad for Barnsley (not the strongest opposition against which to test them).

Start with Fryatt and N'Guessan - stick Yann on if necessary and watch him bicycle kick us to victory.
get Luke O'Neill near the squad aswell.

Come on City. 8 points from 4 games - championship form that....

Feed the Cormorant and he will score!!!

Go on son, now put the ball in the goal and we'll give you a trout!
