I’m genuinely interested to know now, are those of you who have been wanting Shakey gone for weeks happier now than at the end of the WBA game? Do you feel more or less optimistic?

Not a criticism of those opinions, just wondering (I was pretty much there by the end on Shakey but wasn’t clamouring for his departure)

He strikes me as being far more tactically astute than Shakespeare, and since that was my main gripe I'm happy. He's not the manager I'd pick in the summer, but I don't see what better we'd get at this stage of the season

The managerial expert that is Leon Osman has spoken. Next they will be asking Bryan Robson for his opinion.

I'm not optimistic about Puel but I would also admit that I haven't got a bloody clue how things will pan out.

Underwhelming. But probably by the same amount as all the other available managers we were linked with.

Will support him. Most important job he has is to convince our better players that he has a plan for the club.

I feel we have replaced shite with merde.

I'm delighted that Shakespeare has gone because he isn't, and never will be, a manager. I think we'd have gone down if we'd kept him all season.

We have as a minimum now got a manager in charge which is a step up. Had we kept Appleton, I'd be feeling that though. Just having someone in charge with some authority.

My reservations with Puel are not about him as a manager. He appears to be perfectly capable and experienced. I just cannot comprehend how he fits with our club/players/mentality. He's all about slow, possession football. He doesn't play wide players as wide players. He is in favour of constant rotation of personnel. Many of our players just won't like any of that and that's playing right into the hands of the same problems that have hounded us for the last year or so.

Recruiting him means major changes in personnel, formation and style of play. That's fine but it could well be a rocky road for him. Someone like Albrighton won't fit his plans at all. Neither will Morgan or Huth. Or Okazaki. Or Slimani. And quite a few more. Ironically, it was against Puel's favoured diamond formation that Ranieri attempted to get his side to match up and we should never forget that particular horror show.

He may be excellent for the likes of Chilwell, Mahrez, Iborra, Iheanacho. He'll probably convert Gray to a striker and may bring Musa in from the cold in the same position. Good luck to him though when he tries to explain to Vardy why he's being benched as part of his rotation policy.

In summary, I see him creating some havoc in the short term and it will either lead to overall progress and improvement or it will be a complete disaster. If I were to guess on what's most likely, I'd say the latter.

Much happier. Even if it's not going to be good to watch I do think we'll stay up.

Welcome Puel!

Think people are being overly negative about this based on Southampton fans saying the football was boring.

It’s a bit underwhelming maybe, but could be a shrewd appointment.

He’s criticised for playing boring defensive passing football at Southampton, but they lost the likes of Pelle and Mane before he arrived, had injuries to others, so had very little attacking talent in his squad. And they still finished 8th, reached a cup final and were playing in the Europa League.

Our defence is far weaker than our attack. We have a group of talented attacking players - Vardy, Slimani, Mahrez, Shinji, Iheanacho, Albrighton are all good players. Gray and Musa potentially could be.

Maybe Puel adapts to the squad he’s got and realised Southampton would struggle for goals so wanted to make them tighter defensively.

His reputation from France when he joined Southampton was very good, and his teams were known from playing attractive attacking football and a high pressing game.

Or maybe the owners believed that if he can make us more defensively solid again, then the attackers will be good enough to get something.

I’m fairly undecided about this one, but think writing him off on the back of Southampton fans wanting prettier football is pretty crazy. If you look at what else he’s done in his career, then it doesn’t look too bad.

Underwhelming maybe, but not a disaster.

Either way, he’s here now anyway. So back him, back the team, and let’s hope it works out.

I disagree. I think we have a good defence. It is the midfield that is shit.

But if you read about his French teams, his style is not like this at all. Perhaps he has a brain and he will adapt his approach according to the personnel at his disposal.

As one of the 'Shakespeare should never been appointed manager brigade', I think Puel is a step in the right direction, how far he can take us is an open question. However his CV indicates that he is a man able to play open attractive football who has a good tactical brain. Southampton were a disaster, they had sold their best players, and the decent ones left were injured, little wonder he concentrated on a tight defensive set up, they had no strikers and the ones they had couldn't have scored in a brothel. Lets give the guy a chance, time will tell, but at least he is proper manager.

Let’s see what he’s got. Everton are there for the taking so i’m Looking forward to the weekend.

Like what?

I've read several articles about his tactical approach at various clubs and, whilst there are some minor variations, his approach is pretty much the same everywhere.

Nicely put.

I’m also reminded of the impact Claudio made at interview (apparently). Just maybe Puel has done the same?
