Just a thought here, but are the club passing on their utmost condolences to the family and friends of the dead bloke because he died in the stadium?

I would have thought so and to me it seems only right to do so, especially as so many people witnessed it.

In contrast to the rather cynical views from some posters on here, the club normally handles fans deaths with some sensitivity.

The statement made today will have been timed to follow an official family announcement in the local paper (Derek lived in Derby, there was one notice in tonight's Mercury as well), it would have been wrong to make any announcement prior to this.

Numerous fans witnessed the medical team trying to save his life, so the club were also correct to make a statement.

The club also react in an appropriate manner if they hear of fans having serious health issues and indeed pass away, we are aware of several instances of this being the case in relation to Trust members.

The club were also one of the first to introduce a memorial garden, where fans can spend a few moments thinking of loved ones, or chose to have a placque in their memory.

The Trust will be critical of the club where justified, but over these kind of events the club handles them extremely well, with Peter Jones taking a key role in doing so.

I noticed the other day that this has increased in size again this season.

Do the club make a charge for putting a plaque up there or is it entirely free?

My in-laws certainly had to pay when they had one put up, but I'm not sure how much - I think it was in the region of tens of pounds.

Will have to check with the club and let you know

Thank you.

That's a shame. For some reason I would have expected it to be free. It's not as if the club will make a fortune out of this and the goodwill created by offering a free service would be immense.

Any comments made about this guy's death resonate with me - because that's how my granddad died, in his case at the end of a rugby league match - St Helens v Widnes.

However, although I know that's how he would have wanted to die, in support of the team he loved and in his element, it can't ever work for the family.

It was sudden and unexpected, and he was OK, and gone from here, but it devastated all of us he left.

To all those who grieve, to all those who saw this sudden death and its aftermath, my love and fellowship.

Those who are left behind by the passing, sometimes can't understand that this may be the happiest way to go for those who leave us, and they/we feel totally bereft.

RIP. It's taken me a long time to understand.

Thank you.

I think its reasonable for the club to charge a small fee to cover the cost of the upkeep of the memorial garden. It also helps to ensure that those who do request a memorial are doing so because it is important to them, rather than because "its free, so why not".

Clarified with the club

"All plaques made for the remembrance garden are engraved for us from an outside source and cost £45 each. 15 – 18 words may be chosen and a cheque made out to the engraving company

Plaques take 7 – 10 working days to deliver and then the club arrange for it to be placed in the garden."

So the club is not making any money, as can be seen as payment goes to the engraver

Absolutely right. Well said.

Commission from the engravers? Not sure how much an engraved plaque is so not sure if £45 is about right or not.

Thanks for clarifying. Nice to know that there are no ongoing costs for the grieving relatives.

I can't actually believe what I have read in this thread. Absolute ****ing dickhead.

Most importantly: condolences to the family.
