I like that team and think we'd beat Palace with it.

It seems most agree that 36 points isn't quite enough but are happy to pick a weak team for games immediately before a CL game to give us a better chance of getting through, thus more or less forfeiting these games.

Assuming we do get to the semis, these said league games are against Palace (A), West Brom (H) and Watford (H).

The remaining are against Arsenal (A), Man City (A), Spurs (H) and Bournemouth (H).

Looking at our away record this season, I can see us losing against Arsenal, Man City and even at home Spurs can be too strong for us.

It doesn't sit well with me that we could go into the last game of the season against Bournemouth needing something from the game to ensure safety.

For what it's worth, i still think we should more or less give up the Palace game though, even playing our strong team we will probably struggle as we are so vulnerable away from home. The Watford or W Brom games are probably the ones we should target to win even if they are before a CL game (assuming we get to the semis).

This is what I've been saying.

WBA is an away game.

yes sorry forgot about swansea who are also in the mix and i think will also be around 36 points. My point was that we should try the untested cb pairing (whoever that is) in a competative match prior to Madrid. I dont think relegation is an issue. Whoever is in line for the attacking selection against Madrid could be rested without much impact on our new defensive set up. Given the turbulent season so far. this will require some pretty strategic and astute choices by CS, but he must know his prefered starting line up for Madrid, in order to select the team for Palace. One match at a time syndrome doesnt work at the moment! Lets hope he will be in a position to play his preferred line up in CL next week.

I like that team a lot. We can beat Palace with that one too.

Just back from Madrid, finding it hard to get excited about this one, hopefully the players are not feeling the same, but onwards and upwards and an early train in the morning

Ironically if we win tomorrow and don't beat Atletico it will be the most low pressure run-in for us since 2012, with pretty much nothing to play for.

It would however be the nice if the players did set themselves a target of top 10 so that they don't become PL champions who ended up in the bottom half the next season.

A lot of debate about whether this match, or the CL with Madrid take preference and therefore what team should the manager select?
I think it's worth considering: it's not what the fans want, what the players want, even what the manager wants, it's what the owners want. From what we seen so far, everything points to the owners wanting, indeed desperate for, PL survival. If that is the case, to put a weaken team out against Palace could be career-limiting option for Shakespeare.

He picked a weakened team against Everton, I think we'll see a similar team against Palace.

It all depends on fitness and how tired players are, but if we're going to have to have a new back four on Tuesday it would be good for them to play a game together, so maybe a first choice defence. But second choice players in other positions.
