There's been a few 20 minute spells when he was able to use his 'pace and power' to get past mostly inexperienced or ancient fullbacks. Brilliant cross against QPR last season but he's never looked that convincing once teams have worked out how to play against him.

A completely baffling comment So you are telling me that a wingers game depends on who they are up against yet this is not the case for other positions. I thought that the issue with N'Guessan was that fact that he is out of his depth.

Yes. A winger is marked by a specific player. This is not usually true of midfield players - it is sometimes true (though not always) of strikers.

I accept that I am oversimplifying; the winger may be helped by his fullback and that the opposing fullback will have players covering him. Nevertheless a winger will be in a one against one situation more often than players in more central positions.There have been times when I have done posts I thought were controversial. This seemed to me to be rather obvious.

Incidentally a nice winger-fullback story that could not happen today. In the mid-1950s when Stanley Matthews was over 40 he had spent the match going past the Arseenal left back Dennis Evans on the outside or on the inside whichever way Evans went Matthews went the other way. As the match reached the last minute with the result no longer in doubt Matthews got the ball. Evans stood there and just waved him past.
