Dyer Dedicates Goal To Cousin
Posted on: Sun 05 Oct 2008
Match-winner Lloyd Dyer was quick to dedicate his 90th minute strike to his late cousin Leon Lee.
The 18-year-old Birmingham man tragically lost his life a year ago on Saturday after an incident in a park in Kingstanding.
Dyer was extremely close to his cousin and was delighted to see his fortuitous effort find the back of the net at Huddersfield Town in stoppage time, to secure his side all three points.
He said: "I seriously can't remember how I put the ball into the net, but all jokes aside it was a special day for me today.
"This time last year, my cousin Leon was killed so I'm sure he was up there looking down on me and helped make that goal go in.
"I don't think that type of goal would ever have gone in normally. But whilst it is a sad day, my goal and our win will make things a little better for my family and friends, who knew Leon so well."
Dyer's last-gasp strike, after Matty Fryatt had put the Foxes two goals up, was his fifth of the campaign and the fourth successive away league game that he had scored in.
The 26-year-old winger added: "We took a 2-0 lead and looked comfortable but we got a bit sloppy and let them back into the game.
"However, we dug in, showed some good mental strength and came out with a great result in the end."
City are now three points clear at the top of the League One table but Dyer knows that manager Nigel Pearson will not let the squad get carried away.
"The manager will not allow us to get complacent but we all want to keep that momentum going and take this result into our next game at Oldham in a couple of weeks time."
Dyer also thanked the 2,500 fans who made the trip up to the Galpharm Stadium.
"They were great again and really got behind us. Hopefully they are enjoying seeing us win at the moment and will continue to support us right the way through the season."
