Right then I am sticking on my pundits hat and with my experience being equal to the achievements of Andy Townsend and Robbie Earle put together, I am clearly well qualified for the job of assessing our squad and their performance so far. Given that everyone else beats the pair of them nobs in the same area, feel free to do the same as myself.

We are currently 9th with the league record of w2 d2 l1. I have seen us at both league home games and at Bramall Lane and St James Park. Please state these games as this will have an impact upon your rating.

Right off we go

Chris Weale
Looks compentent enough. Kicking is pretty good bar the odd dodgy one. Couple of good saves I have seen off him and other than Swansea, the two crackers at Bramall Ln and St James Pk were difficult to anyone. Also like him cos I have seen around the city a couple of times.

Robbie Neilson
Dodgy. Thought he looked slow at Bramall Lane but then redeemed himself at home to Barnsley with a decent showing against Hume. However, he was poor against Newcastle and he couldn't cross a road all evening. Much the opposite of the previous OTT Gilbert from last term. ie Slow = too quick. One takes throw-ins, the other didn't.

Wayne Brown
Strong, solid, can't pass. He's a simple footballer, so I'll keep it down to a couple of sentences.

Jack Hobbs
The good cop of the centre-half pairing. Confidence player in the extreme but I think he's a super marker as seen in keeping Evans out of the game at Bramall Lane. Had a test last night and let the hard way, defenders can't make odd mistakes.

Bruno Berner
Cult-hero. A lot of effort if not the application. Struggles on the big game environment. However, good start but let's see if McGivern will take over.

Michael Morrison
The other defender I've witnessed. Struggled first half against Swansea but like so many grew as the game went on. Like a lot but he's raw and learning. If he can't get games, give him a months loan at L1 level.

Dany N'Guessan
Hit and miss as so many have said. Looks the ideal impact player but Pearson likes him because of his height which gives us an extra header of the ball from the long punt or clearance. Bags of speed and forgots the ball. Strange un.

Matt Oakley
Looks better than he did at most points of last season and the Holloway season. When alongside Wellens, looks the part but they are two similar footballers. We didn't have a midfielder running onto anything yesterday but that's more of a general complaint than a personal complaint

Ritchie Wellens
Best signing since being relegated out of the Premiership so far. Tenacious, clever, strong in the tackle. Works hard, loves winding up opposition and has super technique. If only he was 21....

Lloyd Dyer
I have doubts about Lloydly at this level. Never made it before past this bridge and doesn't have the biggest of physical presence. Does have speed...but very rarely seen so far. He was cracking as a outlet on the wing, a true winger so to speak but appears over eager in getting into the game by coming in so narrow.

Nicky Adams
Thought he had potential last year, works hard, can spot a pass and has enthusiasm. The lad's been unlucky not to be included considering the start I saw him in, he was fine at Bramall Lane. Hope he makes the 11 for the next game.

Andy King
Is he in our squad? It was only when making sure I hadn't left anyone out, I remembered to include him. Another who could do with loan time should we get another midfielder in.

Paul Gallacher
Is he winger or a striker? Is he too clever or sometimes a bit too ambitious. Give him more time.

Matty Fryatt
The quandry of Fryatt. Currently has a decent strike record per game but per chance, it's poor. Needs to get his shooting boots on, I hope he does it but unsure whether he can. Has defo improved since his last attempt at Championship football.

Steve Howard
Works hard and tried his socks last night at SJP but became a bit greedy in seeing the headlines. Poor peno against Swansea though. Just hope we keep employing him in the correct manner rather than hoof last night.

Martyn Waghorn
Raw, looked the part in two games for us. Anonymous last night. Might find it hard to break through now.

Paul Dickov
Thank **** he's gone for a bit.

The summary shall return in time for the next international break. Feel free to add or arguing the toss and in the process make me look a fool as I contradict myself a couple of times. Would like to see how Tunch or Kermorgant get on.....

I wouldn't go as far as you did with Wellens, I think he's looked great in patches so far, but went missing yesterday. A good signing but not the best in 5 years or whatever.

I'd agree on Wellens I think hes a fantastic player and £1m-odd well spent. I won't go into details, but personally I've been chuffed with him, Oakley, Hobbs, Berner, N'Guessan and Howard. Not quite sure yet about Fryatt, Brown and it's probably a bit early to judge Gallagher though I've not been overly impressed with him thus far. My concerns are with Neilson and Weale. I don't have much confidence in either of them.

Good stuff.

Would argue with one or two of your summations, particularly on Fryatt, and it's quandary, by the way, and all out and out strikers get this aggro, but I don't have the time or energy to debate it.

Mostly OK. Mostly agree.

And it's not 'shall' return, which is an emphatic, it's 'will', which is future.

OK?

Sorry. I'm a pedant.

Ya can't just make your sentences longer and longer by adding 'and'. At some point you need to start a new sentence. If you've got the time to be pernickety you should at least have the decency to allow the time and energy for a debate. :056:

My early impressions
Weale: good
Neilson: dodgy, tends to jump in, not great going forward, throws nothing special.
Hobbs: good
Brown :surprisingly good
Berner : good
NGuessan: average: needs to cross better and remember the ball when running.
Oakley: good
Wellens: very good, hes what weve been missing just needs to cut out the bookings
Dyer: average
Adams: good
Gallagher: Dissapointed, but will wait for him to improve
Howard: good but we tend to hoof when he plays(especially if were losing)
Fryatt:average, but confident he will come good
King: now a squad member
Morrison: competant when needed
Waghorn: impact player
In summary : happy with start, i was expecting mid table but hoping for play-offs, secretly dreading relagation battle.
Early matches seem to indicate we will be nearer top than bottom, happy with the passing football not with hoof.
Sucesses for me are Weale looks good, Browns filled Tunch boots(temporarily) Wellens /Oakley partnership
I would have liked alternative to Howard (maybe Kermo) to aid better type of football
Keep it up boys!

Can't understand the crticism of Weale, by some?? What has he done wrong....No chance with any of the two goals we have conceded in the league? Would like to see people explain their reasoning as to why they think he is poor?

Who do they suggest we play who is any better??

I can't understand what the issue is, I did think that he may have done a little better with the goal on Monday night, but overall from what I have seen he seems a more than competent keeper at this level.

I've not seen any criticism to be honest? Saying he is good not great isn't criticism.

No wasn't aimed at you personally just have read on this forum and others other City fans saying they think he is dodgy etc etc just wanted thoughts?

The whole team is shit.

Ok, well iv been to both home games and watched the Newcastle game on sky, so im not as qualified as you but ill give it a go.

GK - Chris Weale
Nobody can really judge him yet, he looks good, confident and vocal. Great save against Barnsley that gave us the win (Although the follow up from Hume would usually have gone in).

RB - Robbie Neilsen
Like every SPL player ever to come to england, im judging him. He hasnt impressed me as much as Gilbert did, (although at times Gilbert didnt look like a footballer!), his throw ins arnt anything special and he cannot cross the ball past their first man, dispite the fact he gets forward.

LB- Bruno Berner
I dont think this guy is a cult hero, i dont even think hes a LB, caught out of position so many times but hes the best weve got at the moment.

CB - Wayne Brown
So good at clearing the ball, but he cannot pass to save his life, really poor distribution, but at the end of the day this guy can head ANYTHING.

CB - Jack Hobbs
Hes young and hungry and looks a good signing, on his day he's brilliant and id love for us to hang onto him for the next few years to see him develop. I know a liverpool fan who was angry to see him go.

RM- Danny N'Guessen
Like Neilson, im judging him because he came from a crap league, he reminds me of Heskey a bit, bulky and strong, but he sometimes needs to learn when to pass the ball, looked great on his debut so does have the quality.

LM/CF- Paul Gallacher
The jurys out because i never really thought he was any good after his debut goal at blackburn and became a bit of a journey man, hes not a goal scorer but let him settle and wel see.

LM - Llyod Dyer
Un-tested at this level, havent seen him make any of his famous leggy runs down the wing, was far too central against Newcastle. Still unsure about him.

M - Nicky Adams
Twice the player he was last year, if he keeps getting time on the pitch he will only get better. Throwing him into the first team would not be the way to go just yet though.

CM - Mat Oakley
Great vision, an eye for goal, good tackler and a great partnership with Wellens. Cant complain.

CM- Richie Wellens
I agree definately one of the best signings weve made since relegation. Great battler and perfect for this division.

CF - Steve Howard
Wins allot of headers but lacks the pace to link up with Fryatt afterwards, normally leaving Fryatt to weave his own way through after his flick on. But effort wise hes great.

CF- Matty Fryatt
Im a Fryatt lover im afraid, should of at least hit the target, but hes still as good as anyone we could bring in and theres no doubt i wouldnt drop him for any of the backup.

CF - Martyn Waghorn
The skills and movement he showed on his debut havent appeard since but he hasnt really had the chance, let him get back from his setback and well see. But hes had raving reviews from other managers elsewhere.

Berner has been quality so far this season, and we have just signed a left back who didn't get in the team over him.
