There was an earlier thread about the Kindle, but it's locked off now :icon_sad:

I think (!!) I want an eBook reader. Is there really any serious competition or is it one of the two Kindle models I should go for?

Saw somebody with one while on holiday and the text looked really clear even when I didn't have my glasses on.

Assuming a Kindle, is it worth the extra for the 3G version seeing as I wouldn't necessarily want to download a purchase while away from home anyway?

You can do basic web browsing on the Kindle, so it might be worth it for that.

Basic wifi I think, can't see 3G anywhere. Still pleased

My wife has the WiFi one and loves it, has never had need for he 3g yet, worth noting the web browsing is very basic and still being tested

Thanks Beights. I've just downloaded the PC version of Kindle from Amazon to test it with the delivery of free ebooks. The whole purchasing experience seems very straightforward and uncomplicated.

Got a wi-fi version two days ago and I'm hooked already.

Magic.

Although part of me can't help feeling like a hypocrite at buying into a proprietory, locked in gadget and system when I have always previously knocked Apple owners :icon_bigg

I assumed he meant a holiday abroad, my carrier charges that much for data roaming.

I always understood that the 3G was free on a kindle wherever you are. I'm sure I read that on here.

It's free on the Kindle anywhere in the world. Anywhere they have a deal arranged that is.

Anyway, sounds good but in reality who wants to browse in monochrome without a mouse on a truly awful basic browser even if it is free?
