A few years ago there was a study on penalties. I can't remember the source The report concluded that the most successful outcomes were from penalty takers who were determined prior to kick off. Individual success was improved if the player had already decided how they would shoot and had mentally run through the scenario many times.

There was evidence that a goalkeeper would be better to react to the shot rather than gamble.
