I am getting a train back to Leicester on Thursday at 6pm. Will this be peak time?

Most probably not. It would depend where you are travelling from.

If you are undertaking a single (one-way) journey, the matter of peak or off-peak is of relatively minor concern.

I want a one way ticket from Harpenden station, at about 6pm, to Leicester station.

If you plan this journey in advance, you can get a single from Harpenden to Luton for £2.90 and an advance single from Luton to Leicester for as little as £7.00.

Purchasing your ticket on the day of travel, you will have to pay the £37.50 fare that you have already found or wait until the 19:28 (or later) departure from Harpenden when the Saver Single fare becomes available for £29.60.

it still puzzles me as to why virgin charge £32 for a saver return nuneaton<>london if you rock up on the day and charge more if you book before-hand

a saver return is £36.70 on trainline.com

huh? are they trying to get people to rock up on the day?

i'm sure there's some secret network of advance tickets or something

EDIT: ojp.nationalrail.co.uk is coming up with £21.50 !!
EDIT2: oh for shitter times

It says that this ticket is not available and continues to say that until you get up to the one priced at...£29.60 :icon_cry:

I want a one way ticket from Harpenden station, at about 6pm, to Leicester station.

Will the cheapest I can find is £25.30. These tickets are available on the day and you could buy them all at one station.

18.34 from Harpenden Arrives Luton 18.42
18.54 from Luton Arrives Leicester 19.55

Open single from Harpenden to Kettering £16.00
Saver Single from Kettering to Leicester £9.30

The only change you need to make is the one at Luton. You Harpenden ticket covers you as far as Kettering, and then you will be covered on your other ticket to Leicester. I would show them both when they get inspected as you leave Luton.

Hope this helps.

Isnt there anything stopping people from doing this or do they just frown upon it?

You will be fine. Buying the tickets in this way is not a problem.

Some train stations will say they are not allowed, but this is a load of bollocks.

There is absolutely nothing to stop you doing this. You will be travelling on a valid ticket for the the whole of your journey. A very few railwaymen may frown on it - but why should you care about them? The railway companies have no official view on it as long as you follow the rules.

Thanks for everyones help! Going to sort my tickets out later tonight.

Whilst we are on the subject of train tickets...I have the Return Ticket from a Saver Return ticket that hasn't being marked/clipped etc,I take it that i can use it again aslong as its in the Valid Until date ?

To do so would be fraudulent but there is little to stop you. You should be aware that if the ticket has passed through an automatic ticket gate, the validity might have been cancelled.

I was aware of that so I avoided getting off at Edinburgh Haymarket, where I know they have Automatic Ticket Barriers, and got off at Edinburgh Wavewrley where they don't.I then bought a £6.40 single to Glasgow in order to avoid my Saver from Preston to Glasgow being clipped/stamped.
The price of the ticket was fraudulent so my conscience is clear
