I like what I've seen of chambers so far and hopefully he will get a good few chances this season. It seems he's been around fr ages because he made his debut at 15!

With the 7 subs rule, I'd definetely expect Ashley to get more chances this season, certainly if we don't sign more strikers.

But in pre-season, Dickov still seems to be getting more gametime than Chambers...

Which does suggest some lack of faith from the management. He certainly isn't a superstar in the making if that's the case.

Or it could be that Dickov has been given a final, extended, chance to prove he might actually add something to the team while Chambers's place as sub is assured.

Second-guessing anything on pre-season games is mostly just nonsense.

We started the last match of the season at The Walkers by announcing the signing of Jack Hobbs might we start the first match on Sunday by announcing the signing of a new striker.
Nigel does seem to be considering using Dany as a striker. We do seem well off for wingers with Lloyd Dyer and Max Gradl especially as Nigel often plays with only one winger.
In his build Ricky Sappleton seems the understudy for Steve Howard. Therefore the fact that he never even made the bench when Howard was injured seems highly significant.

I have absolutely no idea if this, or will not, will happen. But if it does, I am absolutely sure that it will be unrelated to any match last season.

Does he?

Jayz, I'm ignorant, I knew none of this

A winger is a wide forward, only the modern English bastardisation of the word has turned it into a wide midfielder for some reason.

Wingers don't play as out and out forwards any more, formations these days are 4-4-2, not 4-2-4.

4-4-2 is the most popular formation in England yes. Though teams very much still do play wingers as forwards, 4-3-3 is much more popular on the content, and is becoming more popular in England nowadays too, they all play 2 wingers and one centre-forward.

Chelsea for example have contantly played Kalou and Malouda as wing forwards, Robben and the likes also fulfilled this role in the past. Messi still plays it for Barca etc.

Either way, a wide midfielder is a wide midfielder, not a winger, for some reason England seems to be the only place they get called this, and only in the modern era as well, wingers always used ot be wide forwards over here too, why do you think Alf Ramsey's England team playing the, at the time, revoloutionary 4-4-2 formation was described as the "wingless wonders"?

I told you i was just being sarcastic anyways :icon_wink

Maybe in League 1 and the Championship, but more and more teams in the Prem are being flexible and mixing it up with all sorts of formations. At least half the teams set up with one target man and then one, two, even three playing off, and the employment of both "strikers" and "wingers" as attacking forwards is common.

Man Utd have been doing it for years - players like Ronaldo, Giggs, Rooney and Tevez popped up all over the place. And at times they have definitely played 4-2-4.

Top flight football seems, to me, to be more fluid than it used to be... and it's filtering down. With the teams that came down, I think we'll see plenty of passing football in the Championship this year and some inventive formations.

City don't seem to be setting up as long ball cloggers so I suspect we might even see a few things tried down at Filbo Way this season. We have quite a few players who can play multiple roles, which seems to be increasingly important.

But then again, WTF do I know? I'm an American, practically. Go team! Wooohooo! :icon_bigg

They may have play with four very attack minded players at the same time, but you still see the likes of Ronaldo and Rooney tracking back and helping out the defenders. So it's not like the traditional 4-2-4, it's more of a situation where players can be fluid and swap positions during the game, but they still have the defensive responsibilities they would have if they'd been playing in a 4-4-2.

I think the point is, with much increased fitness levels and mobility of players in all positions, there aren't really traditional formations any more.

You've got to be flexible, baby.

Announcing the signing of a new striker at the start of the match might well be seen as a morale booster for the fans. That is purely an optimistic speculation in my part.
Yes he does. We played much of last season with Oakley on the right instead of an orthodox right winger e.g. Gradl.
Yes it does. If Nigel rated Sappleton he would have played him alongside Fryatt when Howard was out.
No Macky you are not ignorant. You are knowledgeable and wise like all Talking Balls contributors.
