They may have play with four very attack minded players at the same time, but you still see the likes of Ronaldo and Rooney tracking back and helping out the defenders. So it's not like the traditional 4-2-4, it's more of a situation where players can be fluid and swap positions during the game, but they still have the defensive responsibilities they would have if they'd been playing in a 4-4-2.

The book explains the way Man Utd have been playing of late as a 4-2-3-1 in which the front 4 can all interchange (hence the lack of a traditional no.9).
