Apologies if this has been suggested before, and I know exactly how successful playing people out of position has been for us recently (ie: not at all), but....

With Joey going and Weso not guaranteed to be fit, we're going to need a holding-type midlielder. We're broke, and would likely have to sell someone in order to bring in a new face. Maybe we should look from within the squad...

We've already tried a centre back there - Kisnorbo - and that didn't work becuase he's not very good on the ball. Gerrbrand is clearly a cultured player but doesn't seem cut out for the physical rough and tumble of a Championship back four. I wonder, though, if he might have the required guile on the ball to play in midfield whilst still being a decent enough tackler for the holding role.

Could be the best solution for both parties... or it might be a load of cack. But worth a look at least? What does the TB massive think???

Maybe worth a try but i dont think he has the passing game for it, IMO he gives the ball away to easily but then Joey did that for 2 years :icon_lol:

It is certainly worth trying, we have no money, so RK is going to have to be clever in what he does, so trying players in these type of positions will do no harm. As for defensive midfielder, as well as trying Gerrbrand, how about Stearman or Maybury ?

Got to be worth a look at least. I remember with great fondness the full-backs in particular that we have successfully deployed in midfield, mainly to do a job on someone, usually Junhino. Pontus did it very well, and so did Rob Ullathorne. I think even Callum Davidson may have played there on a couple of occasions without disgracing himself too much.

On the other hand, I remember with greater fondness seeing Neil Lennon play there - a genuine holding midfielder. But if needs must...

I have thought about these for a long time, all defenders but are reasonable on the ball, any of them have a chance of being able to perform the role.

Mr H has been saying for a long while that it might be worth trying Stearman as a defensive midfielder. I'm not sure if he's strong enough, and some of his tackling this season this season has been woeful, but it could help him learn his game?

The more I think about it, I think Maybury would be the best choice as a midfield anchor man, he is a decent defender, not too gung ho and would be a perfect foil to a playmaker like Hughes, Weso or Williams.

Also by selecting Maybury, we then not be weakening our right hand side, with Stearman still being able to make his maurading (sp) runs and from a mobility perspective, I would imagine Maybury would be better suited than a centre back.

Certainly worth trying Maybury or Gerrbrand there. Have a feeling we may see Mr Kisnorbo back there though...

FFS I hope not the guy is completely out of his depth in that position, would be a massive mistake IMO.

I think Gerrbrand would be good in the Pontus Kaamark type role.

I spent half a hour with my History teacher talking about the excellence of Pontus Kaamark.
He would be in my team of Leicester since I have been watching.

Kaamark was an intelligent player, reading situations well. I highly rate Gerrbrand, esp. when he decides to go for a surging run. Just a shame he's not been playing consistantly. I'd play him as an anchorman like Kaamark, I'm sure he'd cope well.

Strange that you should mention Pontus Kaamark as last night I was going through some old videos to copy them on to DVD's and I came across our first game against the sheep @ Pride Park where we went 4-0 up in the first fifteen minutes of the match and Kaamark had a great game but then again the whole team did, Heskey got a brace Izzet and Marshall with the other 2.
Our defence was solid and the crosses into the box from Guppy were sublime.
Great memories of yesteryear.:icon_razz

The more I think about it, Maybury would be a horrible choice as a midfield anchorman. I'll admit straight away that I have an aversion to him. I don't think he's a very good full back, I don't think he offers much going forward and I don't think he has a brain, but possibly his biggest weakness is his positional play which is the most important factor in a holding player (as Kaamark / Lennon etc. showed).

I do agree that if Williams / Hughes had the freedom to do what they want by having a holding midfielder behind them, they would both be infinitely better players - as it stands, they are the only two midfielders who are willing to run beyond the front two and we look so much better when they do. As for Weso, assuming he's fit, I think he's the natural holding midfielder. He's got the aggression and leadership qualities and from what we've seen, he's disciplined enough.

I really don't understand why we'd want to move Stearman who looks like a natural right back, knowing when to get forward, knowing when to stay back, looking comfortable on the ball and scoring the odd goal. If it ain't broke...
