While the rest of you were unwrapping your presents, drinking in the New Year and watching the shenanigans in Washington I was in the Royal wondering whether I was about to go to the Great Stadium in the sky and watch Di Stefano, Puskas and Sir Stanley Matthews.
The first point is that the hospital was freezing cold. Amidst all the high tech equipment what |I wanted was a basic hot water bottle. But no Health and Safety. In the 1950s everybody used a hot water bottle and I never knew anybody injured by one. Surely somebody can come up with a hot water bottle that is safe.
For about a month I saw no other patient, nurses came did their job and left and of course I was not allowed avisitors. Credit then to the humourist who included a cracker with my Christmas dinner Who was I supposed to pull it with.
Most of the nurses were African. One tall athletic beautiful Nigerian nurse asked if I needed any help in the shower, Anxious for my independence I turned it down. I could not help but regret that I did not have an offer like that sixty years ago.
I am not a wealthy man but I am comfortably off because of a knowledge of 16th and 17th Century Europe I could not help reflecting that the nurses expertise was a great deal more important and yet they are paid a pittance. There is something wrong there,
