Not so easy these days. The Crossrail contract that Siemens won over Bombardier was not on price, but the fact that Siemens were deemed more financially secure. Madness, I tells thee.

I may have phrased it clumsily, but the point is they cannot give preferential status to UK businesses

I guess you've forgotten that this was a Labour project that's been carried on by the Lib Dems & Tories. In terms of having the support of parliament, it's unlikely many projects have such cross party support.

It's got ****all to do with party politics and bollocks to support in parliament, the global economy is ****ed. There isn't a country on the planet that could justify the expense

What do you mean? 32 billion quid for 80 miles of train track sounds easily justifiable.

I guess you missed the first part of my final sentence.

My loathing of a party of incestuous, no-chinned, Cro-Magnon-brained ****s isn't just confined to this imbecilic project.

You might hate the Tories for what ever reason, but this project was started by, and continues to be supported by Labour. So to claim the Tories are throwing £32 to their mates is nonesense left wing rhetoric.

To summarise, before my point is taken out of all context - you can't make out like this is a Tory project to line their own pockets (as you did in your initial post).

£32 is well worth spending to piss off all those nimby Tories in the empty spaces of Bucks and Warwicks. £32bn also, and we get a free railway line into the bargain. What's not to love about HS2?

Incidentally - how many of the posters in this thread so far have caught a train from Birmingham to London recently? They are absolutely jam packed every day. The trains are (supposedly) as long as they can be and as frequent as they can be (again supposedly). Eventually there will be a need to upgrade the current infrastructure which dates back to the 1800's.

I think the line will be excellent for Birmingham too. If the times suggested are right - it will be as quick to get to Birmingham as the outskirts of London by train.

As you seem to think that the trains are as long as they can be, you will presumably be able to tell us why additional carriages are being delivered at this very time to increase their length from 9 cars to 11 cars. If the trains are running as frequently as they can, you will presumably be able to tell us why an additional 3 trains are being built for the very purpose of making the services more frequent.

There has been a massive upgrading of the West Coast Main Line over the last 20 years, the most recent being the quadrupling of the track between Rugby and Stafford and. of course, that will have to continue. HS2 is no more than a vanity project and there is no business case for it.

The same Siemens who dont know their arse from their elbow on the contract I am working on.... jeez.

1. Who is the current government?
2. Do Labour get a say in current government policy?
3. Can you read? I have already stated I have no party allegiance so to discount a point as left-wing rhetoric marks you out as a bit of a tit.

Especially when referring to Neo Labour. They make Genghis Kahn look like the posterboy for proletariat control of production

it will no doubt cost a fecking fortune

a rock-up return from Leicester to London costs about £150. i bet they wonder why the most common destination from Heathrow is Manchester and why the M1 is busy

the people of Birmingham won't benefit if it's a £250 return and cheaper to get off at Birmingham International and fly it

the major benficiaries are the people of London, who get rid of the god awful Euston station

Someone would have to introduce flights from Brum to heathrow! That was one of the fallacies in the original proposal to build such a line as a way of reducing heathrow traffic. But I agree with your general point.

HS2 will terminate at London Euston - albeit a largely rebuilt station with 24 platforms.

I know Boc, that's what I was saying, London gets rid of one its ugliest stations and has a new one like St Pancras

Euston will expand west, meaning the end of the Bree Louise pub :(
