7 goals in 10/11 games doesn't make Fryatt an idiot in my opinion. Strikers miss chances - FACT. If top premier league strikers like Nistelrooy or Adebayor or Shearer or Owen etc had scored every chance they got then they would have scored 120 goals a season. Fact of the matter is Fryatt was used to surviving off 1 or 2 chances a game - and so is still snatching at chances a bit - which isn't surprising.

One good game this weekend i.e 2 goals and he's right at the top of the pile.

so not an idiot, really.

Howard is the weaker link for me being neither a scorer of towering far post headers or a mobile target man lining up chances for the rest of the team. He needs to raise his game and stop a, fouling anyone who comes near him and b, arguing with the ref instead of concentrating on his game.
I agree 100%, but we're talking mega clear cut chances here, ones that a child would be berated for missing. I'm also talking about his desire to shoot past two defenders when a lay off to his left or right or right would see a team mate with a clear shot on goal. Is general all round team work is shoddy to say the least.

good news that Oldham got done over yesterday, now's the time when we need to start looking to pull away from them, scunthorpe and particularly leeds with some consistency. teams like milwall and walsall can't maintain winning form all season with their squads so an advantage over oldham, scun and leeds would be great.

Agreed. We need to start pulling away and dont forget we miss a game this month again .

Emile Heskey plays a similar role. He doesn't score many goals either but everyone who has ever played in the same team as him has nothing but praise for his overall contribution and what he brings to the team.

Not that I'm saying that SH is our EH, but if SH offered nothing then NP wouldn't pick him. End of.

But on the upside, how good is it if we are top by then and yet STILL have a game in hand :icon_bigg

fair point. if howard were better at the same role as EH we'd be alright. but he is really immobile and doesn't create a similar effect. We need a similar but better player IMO.
Howard hasn't got many assists or goals this term and needs to raise his game.

But he is our only target for every ball - even when surrounded by 3 defenders.

Agreed. and he's not doing to bad a job of it .
I think he's doing a shit job of it.

Please can you tell me why you have this opinion, and identify some examples? I too would like to think he's "not doing to a bad job of it"

He has brought down the ball loads of time but had no one there to past it too or ferked it up ,on a whole he's scored and held play up okish.

Ok he's not the best player to have ,at least he's doing a better job than he did last season .

i find myself in the interesting position of agreeing with melton.

He has brought down the ball loads of time
Then I'm guessing if there's so many to choose from, you'll be able to point me in the right direction.

I can't recall one single time where he's "brought the ball down", let alone "loads of time".

Please educate me.

against hartlepool he was billy ray shitrus.
he moaned at the ref all game despite blatantly fouling his man as he hasn't got a leap proportional to his size.
his link play is alright, but when speed of though is called for ie one two's or give and goes. he often dwells too long.
Fryatt is similar in his indecisiveness sometimes, but has the benefit of having much better feet and spacial awareness than Howard.

In Howard's defence: Adams isn't a great deliverer of a ball from the right in the air, and dyer is not a touchline hugger, playing something more like an inside left (very effectively). Gradel is perhaps the winger that gives Howard the best chance.

Howard needs the ball crossing from the byline, that was what he thrived from in his Luton days when in this League.Haven't seen much of him for us so I don't know what he's like now but we need a target man in this League and he's the only one who remotely fits the bill,I suspect he's one of the first names on Pearson's teamsheet.

IMO at the moment
Howard, King and Hobbs to an extent are being carried by the likes of Tunchev, Dyer, Oakley and Fryatt.
A couple of more dynamic additions (particularly for King and Howard who could drop to a stronger bench) would do us the world of good.

My strong belief is that this team, as it stands, would presently be in the bottom 10 of the championship. There is still a long way for Pearson to go until he can think he's got a strong side for the championship.
