We ought to distinguish between the embarrassing adulation of Hume and the merits of the player himself.

Hume represents value for money. He is not a top class player but he tries and makes a valuable contribution in a team where we lack 100%ers. In my opinion he is always worth a place in the team and being a bit of a utility player he tends to get messed about re. different positions, but he is an asset.

I wouldn't think of him as a utility player, he's played the vast majority of games for Leicester as a striker, and when he's been fit he's usually been in the team, so I don't think he's suffered because he can play on the wing too.

It looked like his time was numbered when we had money to spend last summer, but the money was wasted and Hume remains one of our better players. But if the money spent on the likes of Campbell, Cort etc had been spent wisely I think Hume would have been a fringe player rather than first choice this season.

Regardless of the overall merits, or otherwise, of Iain Hume ask yourself which other striker would have won the header, and then gone on to pick up on the excellent work of Barry Hayles and then slot it into the net:

Howard - might have won the header, wouldn't have got near enough to receive the pass, but would have scored had he got there
Campbell - Might have made the pass, but wouldn't have won the header in the first place, and would probably have missed anyway or (more likely) been caught offside :icon_conf
Fryatt - wouldn't have got anywhere near the header, wouldn't have got anywhere near the return pass, and would have probably hit it straight at the keeper

He may have done precisely feck all for the other 93 minutes of the game, but he is the only cnut currently playing who looks anything like being capable of actually finding the net. And thank feck for that

:038: I was going to say pretty much the same.

I went to the game with a Barnsley fan (bless) and he has always said that he thought Hume was a very clever player and no other player in our team would have won the header and had the logic to run for the return let alone bury it.

Amen to that.

It's not like me to defend the club - but Campbell appeared to be a decent signing.

Cort, of course is ,and was a disaster - and it's difficult to understand how anyone would have thought that he was going to suddenly remain fit and realise his so-called 'potential'.

Hume has been knocked by some in a completely disproportionate way just as he has been over-egged by others. He obviously wants to do well and is prepared to make the effort - so I would always include him in the starting 11.
