ICE HOCKEY can it be taken seriously?

Rob Ray and Brashear started the fight.... big surprise. They are two of the biggest goons in recent years. Their job is to protect the more skilled players and duke it out in a few fights.

I don't watch that much hockey any more, but fighting (especially in North America) is a part of the game... like it or not. Some people argue that without fighting there would be took much stick work - ie hitting someone over the head with the stick, which has actually happened.

Here is another big brawl....

Canada vs USSR - 1987 World Junior Hockey Championships.

Both teams huge rivals, and both going for the gold medal. As a result of this fight Canada and USSR were kicked out of the championships.

It certainly is a violent game.

I thought i read that they'd changed the rules so that the fighting is vastly reduced?

When I have watched at Nottingham, it's an excellent watch and a decent night out.

However, some of the yank stuff can be incredible fast, exciting stuff or very slow, very tasty and boxing on ice

Have you never seen that Paul Newman film 'Slapshot'?

You mean the Brashear/McSorley incident... I'll find a link for it.

There it is, 2.50 in it: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=YbTPFo6znZo

By the way, fighting isn't really allowed in Swedish icehockey (it happens but it's a straight match penalty) and I haven't noticed any more stick cheapshots here so I don't think that is the problem. It's a tradition and as you say, like it or not.

Ben and Nick go to as many home games for the Blaze as they can.
Both love it.
Ben wants me to go to a game but I keep pointing out to him that though I actually understand the basics of the game I don't like it, so it would be a waste of money.

The game he wanted me to go to was Blaze v. Panthers.

Like he thought I'd go a game and choose to support a team from Coventry or Nottingham!

He's a lot happier hockey fan than a football fan at the mo, what with Blaze winning the League title.

No fighting in the Czech leagues. Or at least if it is allowed, it never happens. The problem I see with the Czech league is hits from behind, and cheapshots with the stick. Not saying this is caused by lack of fighting, just a different hockey culture. Hockey in North America is all about the physical play, while here in Europe it isn't as important.

The World Championships are held in Canada this year, we are playing the dirty Russians as we speak, winning 1-0. Lots of penalties. But we're already through to the next round thanks to your boys, The_Lane (I assume you support Czech Republic).

Ben is not happy.

Something to do with the wage structure in this country's league, meaning that higher up you finish, the less of your budget you can spend on wages, and the lower down the you finish, the more you can spend(or something)

Anyhoo, becuase of this, two of Blaze's best players have moved to Aalborg.(Apparently Sweden don't have the same structure). And a few others are moving on as well.

He has now decided next season will be shite for his hockey as this season was for his football.

There's more than a few sport I have an interest in what adopt such a system to equalise the league. It's to stop the moneybags of the sports from winning season upon season but in reality, doesn't really work and instead creating a league where all it's the best players go abroad. Meaning generally as whole, the sport in Britain is a lesser product and a watch. Also meaning lesser crowds which it's the clubs even harder. At least when they did face the moneybags and bigger boys, they were assured a big crowd at the very least.

Hate to be pedantic but Aalborg is Denmark.

A very racialist and disrespectful comment, I am moving around "report post"....................................................:icon_wink

Aalborg in Sweden? It's like saying Madagascar is just outside Ireland.

Madagascar is just outside Ireland.
Well relatively speaking, it could be.

I'm fairly sure when Armstrong was mooching around on the moon he might have made a comment describing Madagascar and Ireland only being a few centimetres apart.

As long he didn't say Aalborg is in Sweden I can accept that.

Pittsburgh 2-0 up against Red Wings in Detroit. Red Wings lead 3-1 in matches so they can win it tonight, doesn't look like it atm though.

Brilliant triple overtime 5th game means theres a game 6 tonight. Been an excellent series so far.
