there will be some good managers about looking for work in the summer. I suspect Coleman will be one of them. Be a good shout that would

It's clear that we need a new manager, but change shouldn't be made for the sake of it. The right candidate needs to be found, their availability will decide on when an appointment is made.

It sounds like Phil Parkinson is going to Huddersfield, not sure if he's good enough for us but it definitely is the young up-and-coming manager we should be looking for.

Of those available immediately, only Mike Newell or Laurie Sanchez (who would want to continue managing NI) appeal in the slightest. The others are either well past it (Peter Reid), retired (Kevin Keegan), or simply not good enough for the club that last fired them (Brian Robson), so why should they be good enough for us?

Who might become available in the summer? Obviously this involves some crystal ball gazing, but it seems likely that Billy Davies or Steve Cotteril will be available, and possible that Stuart Pearce, Harry Redknapp or Neil Warnock might also be available. Would any of these be better than the above two? Davies has the track record, on a budget much smaller than ours he consistently challenged with Preston, and he'll take Derby up- but will that mean that he will stay at Pride Park, poor relationship with the board or not? Pearce has shown he is not up to the job, and has shown poor judgement in the transfer market- considering our position we need someone who can deliver in this area. Redknapp has shown that he can get a team out of the Championship, and has worked with Mandaric before (this included a big falling out), but at his age he isn't a long-term appointment, especially considering his stated desire to live on the south coast with his family. And let's just hope that Warnock retires should the Blades sack him.

Further down the leagues, Paul Ince and Nigel Clough are certainly big names, but we should be clear that neither has achieved anything of real note, compare them to what Martin O'Neil achieved with Wycombe. MON may well be irreplaceable, that once in a generation manager who we all want to, but who never will, manage England, if so he's an impossible yardstick to measure against, but these two don't even come close.

So, ignoring all the imaginary Serbian managers who everyone mentions but nobody names, that leaves a shortlist of four: Newell, Sanchez, Redknapp and Davies. All have had stormy relationships with their boards, but that is no bad thing, we need someone who will tell it like it is to the players, we can't expect them not to do the same to the board- we're suffering with someone who roles over to easily now. None had the most illustrious of playing careers (although I think Newell's fastest-hattrick-in-the-champions-league record still stands!), but have shown that they can turn groups of players into an effective and organised team. Redknapp and Newell have also got track records of getting the most out of their Youth setups.

Is one better than the other? I don't know, they're all clearly good managers would be bounds ahead of what we have now. This is why the board needs to interview all four men and make its decision- it's their responsibility to hire the right person and to then make sure they have the tools (cash, coaches, facilities) for the job. Since Redknapp and Davies are currently in clubs jobs, with the season run-in to concentrate on there is no way that they are going to be interviewed for the job right now, vacant or not. If we want an appointment to be made now, we automatically cut our shortlist down to two, admittedly the two most likely to be attracted and available to City in the summer too, but not necessarily the best manager available to us.

So in conclusion, and I'm sorry for somehow writing an essay on this, Rob Kelly has to go, but in the interest of securing the best future for City, Rob Kelly has to go in the summer. There is no one internally who could take the job as caretaker, and though replacing him now would mean appointing a better manager, would not mean appointing the best manager.

I would sack Kelly immediately and appoint Rudkin or Beaglehole as Caretaker until the end of the season in the mean time giving MM time to line up a replacement for the close season. I too think Coleman would be a decent option, also how about Warnock, I know them man is a complete tool but he is a decent manager who doesn't stand for any shit and he knows this division inside out, he is out of contract in the summer (I think !!) and was a target for MM when at Pompey.

Great effort JB, but I couldn't get past this line. You seriously think that changing the manager would be just "for the sake of it". I think it would be because this clown doesn't know what he's doing, not just "for the sake of it"

Changing one clown for another would be change for its own sake, for the future of our club we need to the next manager to be >very< good.

I agree and I think MM is just hoping and prayingthat we stay up then RK will be out and he can start his search for the Right Manager

I see your point and fully understand it, but I'm desperate to see the back of him and would accept anything at the minute. As has been pointed out already, I'd agree to get Rudkin in until the end of the season, so long as our new manager knows he's our manager next season and can keep tabs on proceedings from a distance.

I think there is a real lack of motivation and this stems from the timing of MM's takeover, it is as clear as day that many of the current management team and the players believe they will be shown the door come the summer and that has led to what can only be described as a "couldnt give a feck attitude" by the majority.

My fear is that if MM does not act now and at least change the manager then we are in real danger of sliding out of this league. We cannot address the player situation until the end of the season, but at least a new manager might just instill some passion and fight from the squad in the vein hope they can convince him they are worth keeping.

Kelly is a busted flush who has clearly lost the will and ability to motivate the players and we will continue our freefall until he is removed from his position. Mandaric has to act immediately to prove he is the man to drag this sorry excuse of a football club out of it's current plight.

How do you explain the unmotivated, unfit and lazy start to the season?

...I would use my many millions to build a time machine and go back to January 2007 in just enough time to withdraw my offer to the shareholders and go do something less boring instead.

Just reading over some of the points and I agree with getting a new man in providing he is right for the job and not just a panic appointment.

With regrds to some names being banded about. Warnock is not going to leave Sheff Utd in a million years and personally I dont think Newell is good enough for the job, look at where Luton were when he left and he was just an outspoken biggot who constantly brought bad attention to his club.

I also have faith in MM and believe he already knows exactly what he's gonna do

If I were Milan then I would sign up to talkingballs and do exactly what we say!!!
