I was looking for a birthday card for someone today, and when sifting through the cards in Clintons, I saw one that said "A Footie Joke For You" at the top... so picked it up to have a read.

The joke was... "A Leeds player, a Newcastle player and a Leicester player are in a car. Who's driving?"

"The policeman!"

How rude and insulting... surely we don't deserve to be lumped in with that scum?

It wouldn't be so bad if the joke was vaguely funny.......

Surely that's defamatory to Leicester players past and present? I know it's only a joke, but any Leicester player could make a decent case that while it doesn't refer directly to them, it could easily refer to them and damage their reputation in the eyes of the public?

Plus, it wasn't even that funny. They should make it 'a Leeds fan, a Millwall fan and a West Ham fan' :icon_wink

Somebody has to drive........

It would have to be possible to interpret it as being directed towards a specific individual(s) for it to be remotely defamatory.

You could take the view that its reassuring that we are still well known enough to get mentioned on a greetings card.

It would have to be possible to interpret it as being directed towards a specific individual(s) who had not had a 'ride in a police car' for it to be remotely defamatory.

British libel laws are pretty clear that you must refer to an actual living person to have any chance - so feel free to call Derby players all sorts on saturday so long as you don't name names.

For example Paul Dickov, Keith Gillespie, Jamie Lawrence, Frank Sinclair, Len Glover, Neil Lewis or Kerrea Gilbert.

Erm...

It's not necessary to 'name a name' to be found to have libelled somebody. It just needs to be clear who you're talking about.

And, of course, anything shouted from the terraces can not be libel either; defamation by spoken (shouted) word or gesture is slander.
