Our Italian job

By Bill Anderson

Craig Levein will be looking for one specific positive from the visit of Italian giants Inter Milan to the Walkers Stadium on Monday night.

Following Tuesday's goalless clash with Celtic, which was overshadowed by the broken leg sustained by young James Wesolowski, Inter will add a splash of glamour to City's pre-season build-up.

And City boss Levein is looking forward to his side maintaining their all-action approach in an encounter which, on style of opposition alone, looks a strange choice in preparing for the hurly-burly of the Coca-Cola Championship.

He said: "It is different, that's all. First, it will let the new players play at the Walkers Stadium again and, second, it will be a good fitness exercise.

"Technically, they are a good side with great ability to keep the ball, so what it will tell us is if we contest and win the ball against them then it is a positive for the campaign coming up.

"The Celtic game was more like a Championship clash and, apart from the incident with Wesolowski, it went very well."

City are expecting a bigger crowd than the 13,087 attracted to the Celtic game and, by yesterday, more than 11,000 tickets had been sold for the clash with Inter, who are managed by former City man Roberto Mancini.

Whether Levein has another new face to unveil remains to be seen.

While Plymouth are claiming they have turned down City's overtures for left-back Peter Gilbert, the City boss remains positive.

Having understood that an offer had been accepted, he believes the wrangling will have the right outcome.

However, City's postponement of tomorrow's scheduled trip to Boston United enables Levein to concentrate on Inter - and field a strong competitive side.

Without the move of the Boston game to a week on Monday, the City boss would have been looking at back-to-back games in a 36-hour spell and splitting his resources which were being stretched by injuries.

After Inter, City travel to Rushden on Wednesday and Oxford a week today, with the Boston clash rounding off the build-up.

Levein said: "We have played three games, two I was very pleased with and the other was the kick-up the backside we perhaps needed.

"I have had pre-seasons where everything went well but, when it comes to the heat of battle and you haven't had any setbacks, things happen that you have not dealt with before.

"So, if we get a setback in any of the remaining games, it will not be the end of the world."

Inter Milan Clash Off

Leicester City v Inter MilanLeicester City's glamour pre-season friendly with Inter Milan has been cancelled at the visitor's request.

The Italian giants were due to visit the Walkers Stadium on Monday evening as part of a four-game tour of England.

But following the recent security alerts in this country, Inter have opted not to travel because of safety reasons.

The Foxes will now travel to League Two side Boston United (7.30pm) on the same evening.

A statement on Milan's official website - www.Inter.it - read: "Football has taken a step back because of increasing serious events which touch the sensitivity of everyone.

"For this reason, and given the situation, the club has decided to cancel the team's tour of England.

"Inter will continue pre-season preparations in Brunico next week, with a new series of friendly matches to be planned."

Supporters who have purchased tickets for the clash will receive a full refund on production of their match tickets at the Ticket Office.

The club can also confirm that automatic refunds will be given to all those fans who have secured tickets via the official website www.lcfc.com.

The Ticket Office will be open from 9am to 5pm all next week (from Monday, July 25).

Club officials have urged fans to be patient during this busy and unforeseen period.

More reaction and information to follow.

Gutted about that!

This is pretty bad of Inter to cancel a tour with 3 days to go! I bet thats going to cost us money just because they think theres a genuine threat to them, which i don't agree with!

Deeply annoyed with that!

I believe they told LCFC earlier in the week that they'd not be coming, then agreed to come, but then changed thier minds again yesterday.

I wonder if they'd have used the same excuse if they were playing Chelski or Arsenal in the Champions League.....

First of all, sorry for doubting the young boy.

Now i would like to know whether Milan have agreed to pay compensation to the club for loss of revenue. Not just the money we lose from this game but also the Celtic game. Afterall how many fans decided to come to only one of these matches and chose Milan as it was slightly cheaper? Quite a lot i imagine as the 13,000 crowd at the Celtic game suggests.

as for the statement on their club website they should surely say 'Milan' takes a step back and not 'football' takes a step back......

MILAN takes a step back because of increasing serious events which touch the sensitivity of everyone. For this reason, and given the situation, the club has decided to cancel the team's tour of England.

Damn you Inter with your overpaid stars - I'm one of those who gave Celtic a miss to go for the Inter game. And that's 25 mins of my life on the phone to the ticket office (for those tickets) that I'm never getting back.

Next season should play safe and just book shepshed dynamo or big names like Hinckley Utd

I was about to spend £40 last night on train tickets, when I saw this thread and thought i'll wait till tomorrow - dam lucky I did!

The club must be gutted about this because it must be a significant loss to them.

My oldest girl was going to be one of the player escorts for this game. Now having just heard the news on the way back i was juuuuuuuuuuuust a little bit peeved. Anyhoo, gets back home even more fed up cos some old git from Nottingham twonked my car (the knob)and find 2 messages left on my answerphone. The first on friday telling us the game is off...dead...kaput!....funny thing is they rang again at 10.30 this morning telling me that all the issues had been resolved and that the game is now back on!!! Oh the joy of being an LCFC supporter....does this mean that not even the club know what is going on, or is it back on????

MB isn't the only person on here with "family contacts" within the club.......

Your damn right there Mr Hazell, especially as I definately have no "family" contacts within the club, makes you the man in that department, the game was not off last night, the definate cancellation came today, still we have the glamour trip to Boston instead !!

i hate to say it lads, but i told you so. any apologies are accepted

We werent wrong because cancellation came through this morning, not last night.

I apologise.

But Inter are bastards, they released a statement on Friday saying they were going ahead. Why dont they just cancel the game at Palace? Secondly I think this is just a simple excuse for some more. Maybe they didnt like the money being offered to them to play.
