Jonny Evans starts for Northern Ireland in their home game vs Netherlands

Ricardo starts for Portugal in their away game in Luxembourg

I mean, seriously, this is ****ing rubbish, isn’t it ?

Southgate is between a rock and a hard place. His holding midfielders Rice, Henderson, Dier arent strong enough (either not quick enough or bad positional sense when playing on their own). As a result he plays one of these holdera and one deep midfielder who is a bit more of a 'passer' (delph, winks, barkley) in front of the defence and then a number 10 / second number 8 floating: Mount, Ox, Alli, Lingard etc. All this does is mean that we arent great at closing down in midfield and our passing isn't crisp enough. It's the same as when we were playing Ndidi and Mendy in front of our defence. It slowed the passing up and invited pressure rather than making us more solid which was the intention.
Southgate needs to trust a holding midfielder to do that job and then get two proper technicians in front of him. I think in the long run it will be between Foden, Mount and Maddison - the Ox is not their type of player and should be used against shit teams in a more open set up.

My team for the euros would be

Pickford
Arnold Smalling Maguire Chilwell
Rice
Maddison Mount
Sterling Kane Rashford

I'd agree with most of that. We should recognise that he's just qualified at a canter with a team scoring goals for fun. He always seems to be very enthusiastic over Winks though, so I'm sure that he'll want to fit him in as a deep laying playmaker. I think that does leave Mount and Maddison looking at the same spot in the team
