Consider joining the youth hostel association if money is tight, they have (had?) some good quality, cheap, safe, accomodation and you'll meet interesting people from all over the world. If it is still the same you join the English YHA and it gives you access to all the other countries.

Forgot about that, great advice.
And you'll get some good cheap food other than bread and cheese...

Check local taxes when camping, esp. in greece as they used to add 5% to the bill, leaving you with no money for water on a 4 hour journey back to athens...grrrr
