I'm just guessing but - giving Jannik a 3 year contract means we could sell him even before this season starts and we'd still get some cash in - rather than just letting him go on a 'free' now.

Technically yes. But not likely. Unless some world class CB suddenly declares himself a lifelong City fan & wants to come here for a massive pay cut to help us rejuvenate ourselves.
Still, at some point we could always do what we normally do I suppose & sell him to Man U or Chelsea.

I mean, it's a perfectly sensible decision. He's a decent enough defender who, in the right setup, has already proven he can be perfectly adequate albeit not spectacular, in the Premier League.
Would you have preferred no CB, because that's probably the choice given our shackles?
