I'm going to try get a Kindle Fire before I leave the US, just hope some retail stores have it by 16th. It's not an iPad but I don't want an iPad. It's not released in Europe until the new year.

I've seen mixed reviews so far. I'd be more inclined to get the base Kindle and a cheap Android tablet.

I purchased an android tablet the other week, the Zenithink ZT-280, It's fantastic, for about £115 it's one the best bits of kit I've got.

I'm not sold on the older Android 2.3 tablets and the fire with Android 3 (although modified by Amazon) will cost around 130 pounds here.

I think it'll be ok but obviously you get what you pay for.

Did you get one Biff?

I managed to get one today after waiting for ages at a Best Buy store, the wait was not for the hordes buying the kindle, it was because half of Brazil seemed to have turned up to buy ipads. Have I made a mistake? Only time will tell.

I'll post my thoughts on it when I actually have time to look at it but my first thought was it's thicker than I expected.

A problem Lisa has never complained of, fnah fnah.

First problem is I can't get apps (even free ones) because Amazon hasn't opened an app store in my region. I might just have to root this device and that way Amazon gets no more cash from me, stupid marketing imo.

Where I come from 'to root' has a particular meaning...and if you can successfully do it with the Fire then I may be getting one too.

I've found that it is possible to install the getjar app and get android apps from there but the only way to get video and music is using youtube none of the premium streaming services will work and neither will iplayer etc.

This will all be resolved when amazon decide to open up their services outside the Usa but it handicaps the fire for now.
