Presumably you are saying that it has already been decided to release him.

I can't think that it is because he has been definitively written off for medical reasons because he is being selected for squads.

No need to release him. His contract expires at the end of the season.

Quite - so you have heard that he's been told to find another club.

I don't know whether it has been put to him so bluntly but he and his agent must be aware of the lack of any discussion with the club regarding a new contract.

Sometimes clubs that are not too fussed either way wait until the end of a player's contract before opening negotiations with a view to offering much reduced terms.

I would have thought that he might be useful next season - but if NP doesn't like his style then he should know a bit about central defenders.
 
It could go either way and I have no problem with that - decent player, decent reputation, full international, good athlete, good attitude, good in the air, goal threat, good age... but injury prone, piss-poor distribution and might not be NP's style... City might still be making their minds up as well.
