I remember the incident, there was a big fuss about it at the time. It was in the 1978 World Cup finals, and the ref was Clive Thomas.

I don't believe it is allowed to happen but I have no evidence of this. It's gone midnight and I can't be arsed to look.

Boc will be along in a bit though.

Sorry for taking so long.

No, I am pretty sure that penalties should go ahead even if time is up. Maybe it's been different in the past.

The bit about time being extended for penalties has been in the laws since at least the 1950s. I think, but can not prove, that the laws at that time stated that time should also be extended for corners - it does not do so now.

A trivial question for my trivial mind. I think the first half went on well over the minimum time put up by the 4th official. It seemed to me that there was hardly any time left when we won a corner. By the time we took the corner I felt we were over time. We then won another corner. It was onlt when the ball went out of play for a Bristol goal kick that the referee blew for half time.

I am aware that the time held up is a minimum added on. I had taken it that time would be added on for injury, time-wasting etc.

My question is this. Does FIFA expect referees to blow whever time is as up whatever the situation on the pitch or are they expected to wait until the ball is in a non-dangerous situation.?

In theory play should stop soon as full time is reached. However, referees are encouraged to wait for a less contentious situation before blowing for full time to avoid controversy and so it has become an accepted part of the game and people kick up a fuss if one team is on the attack and the whistle is blown. There is nothing in the laws of the game though that says this should happen, a referee would be perfectly entitled to end the game with the ball on the way into the goal (with the exception of a penalty).

It should be pointed out that, in the instance of the penalty, the game is considered over when the original penalty action is complete. Therefore, were the goalkeeper to save the penalty kick, the attacking team would not be permitted to then score from any rebound opportunity.

erm.... the west end of Leicester, not heard of it?

I was being partially sarcastic. If you live so close why on earth would you want to leave early?

Up to you of course, but please make sure you don't interupt the view of those who choose to stay to the end when you leave. :icon_wink
