To be fair to him from the January of that season to the time he left, I'm sure his goal scoring ratio was about 1 in 2 or better, which coincided with De Vries' arrival and therefore someone that was physical and won more headers (yes I know what I wrote) than Scowcroft or Hammond.

From January to the day he left I doubt there were many strikers with a better goal tally or ratio in the division.

Reading off Soccerbase he got 14 in 30 games from January - far better than any of the strikers we have had since including Fryatt or Hume, and most would argue that is in a far worse side than what we have now.

Connolly worked hard out the box, made good runs into the channels behind the full-backs and centre halves, but his final ball/shot was often woeful.

Worth a punt when we bought him, but his history suggested he would at best be a one-in-three goalscorer. £3m was way too much to turn down for a decidely average player (although shuch was the state of the team at the time he was one of our better ones!)

I agree. Players of that sort are worth a bet if you can guarantee a good supply of chances - I would sooner have a striker who, over a season, converted 1 chance in 10 and did it every game than one who converted 1 in 3 but only got one chance a game, which we have seen plenty of!. It's all about creating an effective team rather than the abilities of 11 individuals.

Runoured to be a Roy Keane target, along with several others including Neil Lennon!

"The Black Cats boss also wants to grab former Republic of Ireland colleagues Graham Kavanagh and David Connolly from Wigan. (Daily Mail)

As well as landing Man Utd reserve Liam Miller, Portsmouth defender Andy O'Brien and Blackburn midfielder Jonathan Douglas - all Irish. (Daily Mirror)

Keane is also credited with a deadline day bid for Celtic captain Neil Lennon (Sun)"

Id have him back now.

you'd rather have Connolly than Hume, O'Geady or Fraytt, you're insane!!! The guy was total shite!!! £3million was an absoloute joke, that must have been like how Wolves were feeling after we bought Akinbyi for £5million

He clearly wasn't total shite, as I stated above for 6-8 months he was scoring at around 1 in 2 which is a superb ratio.

His career is along similar lines around 1 in 2 or 1 in 3 and as i rememeber that season he was a stand out player for us in a team of old aging rubbish.

He wasn't shite - limited yes, not worth £3million yes, but not shite thats absolute bunkum.

David Connolly Season Stats For 100 04/05 Leicester City - 44Games/13Goals That's more like 1 in 3.4 goals a game

And he sholud have scored a goal a game with the amount of sitters he missed

As I keep saying from January onwards, and you could argue that every striker in the world should score every game cause they get chances each time they play - its a ridiculous argument as that would mean every striker in the world is 'shite'.

His scoring record embarasses all of those players.

It's history Guys, let it go. I don't understand what you are arguing about :icon_lol:

hehe. Obviously i'm not a fan of the guty. Too lightweight. Was pushed off the ball too easily. Didn't Give it his full effort. Ran around alot but got nowhere. Missed too many ezasy chances.

If you rate him then fine, but i don't and never have done

Can't believe people are saying Connolly didn't put the effort in, even when he wasn't scoring he was one of the busiest players on the pitch.

He wasn't worth 3 million, but he also wasn't rubbish.

So that's settled that debate....

Yes, he was busy allright. busy doing nothing. He ran around alot, but he was too lihtweight and got pushed off the ball too eaily, and he never really did much when he got the ball. People make out he was a Dickov-type player, but he wasn't!

Its safe to say this debate has came to his conclusion.

Connolly although prone to missing the odd sitter as not a bag of shite and comfortably good enough at this level. His scoring record is better than anyone elses at the club currently. The deal offered by Wigan was a good un for us to take.

Melton has won :( :frown: .
Don't worry Hazza, there will be other chances.

Good poll though and thanks for debating. It's all good fun :icon_wink

Well I dont mind losing as along as I am not bored, Melts. When nowt happens on here it gets an tad boring.
I don't really think you lost TBH. I was possibly wrong when I said he was shite. It seems most people don't think he was, I still do. Although it was unanimous that he missed a lot of sitters.

Lets start another debate
