what is the best way of getting from West Hampstead to Vicarage road on Sunday, bearing in mind both the overground and metropolitan line is closed.

The TFL website suggests the following: Jubilee line towards Stanmore. Get off at Stanmore then take the 142 bus from stop 'A' destination Watford Junction. You can get off on the High Street which is about 10 minutes away.

The Trianline says this is available -take the train to Watford junction on the thameslink via Euston £6-40 day return if you have a railcard

Yes, it will. The Euston to Watford Junction part of the journey is with London Midland. It is only the DC lines that Overground trains run on that are closed.

That's not the proper walking route though. Quicker and shorter to go down Clarendon Road and cut through the town centre.
