So which part do you disagree with?

I agree with the bit that he's a wonderful player (when he wants to be).

But for his sake I hope we don't keep him for a long while yet. He clearly feels (perhaps rightly so) that he's too good for our level now, and just doesn't seem interested any more. Every time I see him play he just gives that impression that we're keeping him there beyond his will.

There's two players I haven't seen any improvement from since Shakey took over. One is Schmeichel, because he was immense at the start of the season. The other is Mahrez, for the complete opposite reason.

He'll be gone in the summer. Even though he's the greatest player I've ever seen in a Leicester shirt, and will be forever grateful for his part during last season, I wouldn't be too upset. A bit similar to Ranieri's departure in some respects.

I completely agree.

However in reality if a major European team did come in it's inevitable we'd have to let him go as otherwise we'd just have a Payet situation. The various rumblings seemingly by his agent over the last year certainly suggest he'll be agitating for a move for the player even if Ryiad isn't.

Secondly I wonder if we'll have any choice in the matter. Someone on RL or another channel I think mentioned the possibility of clauses around Champions League clubs putting in offers. Even if the club has denied a release clause (in terms of price) there may well be other contractual factors that mean it's out of our hands.

Agreed however I hope the punters who did his contract learnt their lessons from last season i.e vardy/kante. The buy out option was ridiculously low IMO I think Mahrez is happy at the club and does not have the same temprament is Payet I hope.

To the tune of "Jamie Vardy, he scores when he wants":

"He's a wonderful player when he wants,
he's a wonderful player when he wants,
Riyad Mahrez, he's a wonderful player when he wants."

Don't drink too much in the pub before the game.

Shame we won't get the same cash that he was worth at the end of last season.

but maybe more than the end of next season. :)

I think if he was going to go, end of last season was his best chance when his stock was high. Would Barcelona be interested now after an indifferent season from him compared to last season?

I think I'm correct in saying we picked up one point while he was away at the Africa cup of nations coinciding with our worst run of the season.

Whilst he may not have reached the heights of last season you can see that other teams fear him every time he has possession.

I hope he stays and I continue to get that buzz when he's on the ball

Putting to one side the absurdity of the criticism of Mahrez, how about this point.

Why is there a groundswell of adulation towards this years Player of the Year who decided to jump ship at the first opportunity. Whereas, last seasons Player of the Year gets unending criticism for staying put?

I think it's to do with one inspiring his team to win the prem title for a second consecutive season and the other not inspiring his team.

I think that "top European" team would still pay more for Mahrez than Kanté this summer though.

I think part of the reason Kante got it this year is because he's been able to show a bit of consistency after what he did with us last season. Personally I think Hazard should have got it this year but Kante's consistency from last season has probably helped him win it this. The Tottenham FA Cup tie swung in Chelsea's favour when he came on and the is just the most recent example of how valuable he is to them..

I agree, Hazard should have won. That's the same Hazard who was so utterly woeful last season of course.

Chelsea could have cashed in on him but they didn't. Why anyone would want to cash in on Mahrez when he too could be a totally different player next year and do exactly as Hazard has done this season is beyond the absurd.

It's not absurd. It totally depends on how much faith you have in the player being interested in playing again. Mahrez hasn't lifted his performances since Claudio was given the boot. That doesn't suggest it's down to the manager in his case. He ****ed up by not leaving in the summer IMO.

Kante saw sense. Mahrez didn't and now regrets it.

Absurd because it's a different opinion to yours?

The difference is Mahrez will still feel he's too big for the club next season. Hazard isn't too big for Chelsea.

Comparing Chelsea and Leicester is "beyond the absurd".

Don't know where you lot get your insights into Mahrez's character but to me he seems to love playing for Leicester, does do his best but unsurprisingly struggles when the opposition put three men on him the second he picks up the ball. He ain't no Messi but he's the best we've got.

Come on you don't actually believe that do you?

Mahrez is, as everybody agrees, one of the most talented players we've ever had. Up there with Weller and Muzzy for me (not saying Muzzy had the same talent, I just loved him as a player). If he's got this ability, then he's got this ability. Why he's not showing it consistently this season is open to speculation of course (see above).

I think we'd be crazy to let a player of his ability go without a fight. I've been as frustrated as any with some of his performances and decision making this season, but I fully believe that IF, as many think, he's still happy with us, it's only a matter of time before we see the best of him again. Rather than him not trying, I think a lot of his mistakes etc are due to a lack of confidence. Everything he tried last year seemed to come off, and that's not the case this year.

Wait until he curls one in with his left foot past Cech after leaving Monreal for dead on Wednesday night and all will be well with the world again.
