If you’d spent tens of thousands of pounds on plastic surgery and looked like how United played I’d take the piss of you as well. Even if you did pull.
But in reality, I'd still be better looking than most and have more chance of pulling than most, whether you chose to take the piss or not.

This metaphor is getting way too weird now anyway. I wish I hadn't have started it!

I find it very odd when people talk in terms of these number codes as if they actually mean anything. 4-4-2, 3-5-2, 5-4-1, none of these things speak to passing style or tempo or any of the other thousand and ten variables that make up a coherent set of tactics. You say 4-4-2 or 3-5-2 as if each represents one inflexible concept, and they just don’t.

So we agree United is the Katie Price of football now. Excellent.

Yep it seems obvious in some ways that Puel is putting out an 11 that can change shape. Amartey can go narrow, Maddison drops a bit deeper, Gray goes more central when defending. Which is basically the 352 people are talking about.

There’s a joke about Dwight Yorke in there somewhere but I’m too lazy and unfunny to craft it.

I’m actually quite proud of that metaphor. Formerly a very attractive side that have spent gobs of money and gone through a series of partners to remain relevant and attractive but it all looks very unhappy, desperate, manufactured and a bit of a mess.

If United are Katie price then who are Liverpool, Man City, Spurs, Chelsea, Arsenal and Leicester?

It's still early early days. I think we'll move on to a 3-5-2 or 3-4-2-1 given all the options we have at CB.

Maguire Evans Morgan Benkovic Soyuncu Benny Johnson.

Even if Benny and Johnson leave on loan or permanently, that leaves us with 5 capable centre halves for three spots.

I think we've got good competition for most places in the side. Iheanacho having a strong pre-season hopefully means he will be able to compete with Vardy.

Midfield is packed with options. Even more so now Ricardo is being used as a winger.

Ricardo/Ghezzal/Gray/Albrighton/Diabate for the wingers is healthy competition, not to mention Chilwell if we move in that direction.

I think we lack a bit of quality up front but keep Vardy fit and give Iheanacho game time and I reckon we'll be good. Sign additional striker in Jan.

We're gonna do well this season and are building a young and vibrant side for next season.

I can’t work out whether by being on the piss in Edinburgh last night I missed a decent performance, or a shit one? Whether we created chances, or not?

Quite confusing, really. I know people have differing opinions and obviously that’s fine, but they seem to vary pretty markedly, in here.

Most of the team looked sharp and were keen to be on the front foot. The passing was crisp and, for a spell in the first half, we dominated control of the ball.

But the description of us being 'decaf' was perfect. We reminded me of us under early Pleat or McGhee (for those unfortunate enough to remember those days). Nice football, a desire to play the right way and do the right things, but ultimately boys against men when up against seasoned opponents.

In truth, Man Utd controlled the match from the 2nd minute. They were always ahead and Mourinho clearly had his team deliberately retreat and sit back to conserve themselves at times. When they broke on us in the first half, we looked vulnerable every time. I've watched the game back today and if you cannot see how Mourinho had the game go pretty much exactly how he wanted it to go, you're missing it. Further evidence from Mourinho's post match comments where he was very complimentary about us. He always does this when an opponent does exactly what he wanted/expected them to do.

I've no doubt that we will improve markedly from this in terms of personnel, shape and performances. However, so will our opponents. Gray and Chilwell won't get many chances to play against Darmian (3rd choice at right back) and Mata who were both diabolical for United. They had time, space and opportunity and they didn't do enough with it.

Maddison and Ricardo were both encouraging. I really hope Maddison wasn't fully fit (he himself claimed to be disappointed to being withdrawn), because it made no sense to take him off when we did. Without him, we lost our unpredictability.

It was all very nice at times, but I never thought we were going to win. The changes in the second half made us markedly worse although Vardy showed what a few more players with his attitude and disrespect for an opponent could have achieved. When he robbed Shaw to set up Gray, then found space for a good chance and finally scored, it really did show up what was possible.

It was a perfect time to play Man Utd away. They weren't ready at all. However, they beat us. If that's okay because we should expect to lose at Old Trafford, so be it. But if we want be the team the owners expect us to be, it was an opportunity lost.

As relates to Amartey, and this won’t be a popular opinion, he should probably start a run of games.

That would certainly make for an early resolution of your stated ambition to get Puel out of the club at the earliest possible moment.

I’ve just watched the full game. My tin hat is at the ready, but I think Amartey was a little unlucky. I could see what he was trying to do on using his shoulder and it just dropped a little low and hit his arm. It was definitely a penalty but I don’t think it was as brain dead as some do.

What did make him look brain-dead was his pointing to his upper arm and appealing that it wasn't a penalty. It seemed almost as though he doesn't actually know the law relating to handball.
