I think having a player who can pass a ball 5m might persuade Puel not play Simpson.
I'm assuming you didn't watch the game last night. If Amartey did pass the ball more than 5 meters it certainly wasn't to a blue shirt very often. He was garbage from the first to the last.

The entire match was spoiled for me by the pre-match thread and posts from HTB and Homer. To be fair it was not Homers fault. HTB is a man who believes in abbreviations not names. He posted about JM to which Homer replied.
She's an absolute star in my eyes, and her and Claire Sweeney together will be an absolute pleasure to watch

I presume that Claire Sweeney was the rather splendid blonde. Unfortunately I saw no JM with her only that turgid Gary Neville (for HTB that is GN). Homer you are clearly at the cutting edge of popular culture but please remember that some of us have lost the plot ever since Elvis (EP) went into the army. Why was Claire Sweeney talking to Gary Neville rather than JM and above all who is JM?

Of course those of us who praised Amartey before the match are hanging their heads in shame. All credit to Our Harry who did well although he needed more time off. I was surprised that Puel brought on Ghezzai . Give the chap a chance to settle in Claude.

I can’t work out whether by being on the piss in Edinburgh last night I missed a decent performance, or a shit one? Whether we created chances, or not?

Quite confusing, really. I know people have differing opinions and obviously that’s fine, but they seem to vary pretty markedly, in here.

Indeed they do. I believe there are three categories of poster:

1) those with a glass half full
2) those with one half empty
3) those with no intention of ever owning a glass

I haven't seen any of it either. Not sure if I should put money on us winning the league or finishing bottom.

Yeah, hard to tell if this thread is all you have to go on. I think we can all agree Amartey was ****ing dogshit though.

Yep, truly woeful. It’s a good job that Old Trafford is devoid of windows around the perimeter of the pitch as I am certain he would have just licked his way around.

We created chances. Maddison should have scored with time and space in the box but De Gea made a decent save. Gray had a good chance from 6 yards out that was well saved, Vardy blazed a volley over when he could have taken a touch. Nacho had some sights of goal that a slower defender (so all of them) than Bailley wouldn’t have recovered. Honestly, we were alright

As relates to Amartey, and this won’t be a popular opinion, he should probably start a run of games.

To Brown Noses point earlier this week: it’s a very young inexperienced team and loads of naive mistakes are going to get made. If we bomb out players after their first poor game/bad mistake this season we won’t have any left by Christmas. I know Amartey has a bit more history behind him, but so does Puel and I’ve been reliably informed by this forum that this is a season for second chances.

If he’s in the side because the full strength team isn’t ready, that’s one thing and he can be dropped. If Puel sees him as integral, then he needs to be treated as such even if he had a balls up in the first game.

Basically, drop him now and I think you lose him forever. I’d let the lad play his way out of it.

Yeah, I can’t name a player who’s played for us and never had a bad game. If we shuffle the team constantly they’ll never get used to each other.

Simpson is no better and he is slower last season proved that he is not good enough

Thank you DG ;)

It's started already. Manchester United are 'complete shite'. Utter ****ing madness. Is it the same kind of 'shite' we were told Manchester City were all season last year when they won the league at a canter smashing a plethora of records on the way? It seems since winning the league that every team we play is 'shite' or 'there for the taking'.

They're not 'shite'. They finished as league runners-up last year on 81 points, as many as we got when we won the title. They may be frustrating and play a brand of football that is ****ing dull as dishwater but they are in no way 'shite'. The perspective of some on here really needs adjusting.

Best post in this thread. Could not agree more. The level of dislike for Man Utd on here defies all logic and colours people's judgment.
They are a good team and played well. If you say they are crap it demeans our performance which was excellent.

Last night was far more about the performance than the result as far as I'm concerned.

And another thing. The lampooning of Luke Shaw on here backfired spectacularly. Some would call it 'karma'.

Having had time to reflect I can't help but feel hopeful, frustrated and worried.
The hope comes from the promise of a youthful side (average age 23?). I was especially impressed with Pereira and Maddison. As for Ghezzal, I am not going to form a judgement based on 30 minutes at Old Trafford, however, there was one ball played to him over his shoulder and he controlled it exquisitely. It almost reminded me of someone else! Maguire and Chilwell were also good but I was disappointed with Ndidi's distribution, Grays end product and Silva's athleticism.

As others have noted, we have lots of promise but that means nothing in the cut and thrust of the premier league. I hope to god the spine of Schmeichel, Maguire, Ndidi and Vardy is strong enough to keep us out of trouble.

The frustration comes about because I believe United were really not that good and were there for the taking. With a more clinical edge at both ends of the pitch, we really could have won that game.

In addition, I am intrigued as to the two new centre backs. The Turk looks exceptional on the highlights and could really add to us as a ball playing side. But again, we are only talking about potential here.

Finally, next week is the barometer for me. Going to Old Trafford and losing is acceptable (though it really makes me cringe type that!). Playing at home to a newly promoted side is where we will surely find out how good we are and how good a manager we have got.
