Matchday Routine

It's too bastard hot in there, and crowded. We moved to the Holiday Inn a few weeks back now but lots of others had the same idea and now that is getting as bad. Though it is only £10 for 4 pints.

I've noticed it getting busier, and at approx 70P cheaper a pint I can't blame people moving over there.

Due to other commitments on Saturday I generally only have time to pick up other friends on the way in and get to the stadium just before kick off.

I thought 1884 was STs only anyway so haven't tried recently even if I have been early. I have been in a few times in previous seasons but it took too long to be served and was too crowded.

I've been in post match (not this season) when they don't let you out of the car park but it just seems to lack atmosphere. Perhaps it's because we'd usually just lost.

What boc, homer and RS said. If you want pubs, there are some fantastic ones in Leicester that the 1884 could never compete with.

The ones I go to are the Swan And Rushes and Out Of The Vaults - I've been told there are other fine pubs in the city but I do not know them personally.

These are pubs with an excellent range of well-kept beers, a good pub atmosphere and regular clientele. I'd say that the location of the 1884 bar inside the stadium complex, coupled with its very 'corporate' style layout and the cavernous space, would make it impossible for it to suddenly become a 'traditional' pub with those strengths, even were they to employ beer experts and a host of good designers. Even were they to manage this, they would then be faced with trying to attract a new clientele from people who already go to pubs they like a lot, which would be a losing battle IMO.

What I'd suggest they do with the 1884 is improve what's there - make the beer better and cheaper, ditto the food, maybe spruce the place up a bit. I don't know what their non-alcoholic range is like but this could be an area of strength for them, as I imagine a lot of their clientele would be people who drive and park at the stadium. Survey the people who go there already to find out what they do like and what they would like to see. Attracting people who already have established routines (like me and a lot of others on this thread) would be very hard: what they should do is try to entice those who don't have an established pre-match routine, especially the ones who park at the ground.

Oh yeah, 'family friendly' would probably be a good idea - as RS said, those of us who like pubs don't go there anyway. If they get the people who drive their families and arrive at 2.45 to come an hour earlier and have a meal, that could be a goer for them.

Do I get a fee for this? ;)

No but I might :icon_wink

I just love the Peel - Bricklayers can be alright too.

Personally I really liked the 1884 when I first went in there, it had a 'big club' feel about it which I liked - then however it turned in to a pit of cock, with beer and pretend IC members and Homer's son. It takes ages to get served, the beer if pants but the idea is sound....I actually think it would work a lot better if it was only for members/ST holders actually, and if there were more breasts. And a pic of Joey on the wall.

Beer in the pub for me.
I like Real Ale, so that counts out most places that are only used once a week or so, as it needs looking after (and needs drinking) regularly.
I prefer a traditional pub atmosphere, where you know the landlord, can chat with regulars etc, rather than a bar which seems plastic, has temporary staff who couldn't give a monkeys and overpriced tasteless fizzy drinks.
But that's just me.
There are some good pubs close (ish) to the ground - Vin IV (aka the Vaults), Swan and Rushes, Western, Black Horse, Criterion, Gateway.

For the sort of folks who prefer the bar to a pub, they normally like loud music, Sky TV on giant screens etc - maybe they could do a bit more of that.

On the subject of the 1884, what happened to the girls coming round with the teamsheets?

I don't have a beer before the game because I have reached an age when I would have to use the club toilets. I get irritated by people who squeeze past me while the game is on and do not want to join them or the queues at half time. I most enjoy my pre-match ritual during those precious games in April, August and September when the weather can be good. I go to the garden of the Kings Lock Tearooms on the canal past Middleton Street for a relaxed meal of coffee and beautiful baked baguette in uncrowded surroundings without any piped music. I then have a leisurely stroll in some nice countryside along the river-canal to arrive about 2.45. This for me is idyllic. I realise that this must seem very dull to the majority of the Forum who are young, dynamic and have no problem lasting a 90 minute match after a pint of beer.

If we get to the game in time for a pint before kickoff, we'll have one on the concourse.
The 1884 is on the opposite side to the direction we come from.

Afte the match we go in the 1884 for a couple, before bimbling into town.

Prematch used to be the Hero, but it got just too packed, now start off at O'Neill's.

The Swan and Rushes is an awful place, I don't know how it could be recommended.

A pubs pub has got to be the Black Horse, for both pre match and post match beers.

Well done for taking this up with the club Lazzer.

My group used to go to the 1884 until they allowed non season ticket holders in, when it got even busier. We now drink in town generally in the Highcross. Not the best place in the city but it's cheap. We then get a taxi to the ground (lazy I know but the two blokes I go with are in their 60's) about 2.20 and have a beer or coffee on the concourse. We still use the 1884 for night games as it's more convenient.

The 1884 could be improved by making the drinks and food cheaper and sorting out the bar staff. The congestion at the bar could be eased if the drinks were served faster. On a number of occasions I have asked for a pint of carlsberg and 2 pints of pedigree only for the bar person to pour the lager and then go off to find glasses for the pedi.
Why not get all the glasses and pour the pedi whilst pouring the lager.

When I used to go in there I always headed for the guy who runs it, Steve. He knew how to serve beer and did so quickly, often taking the money for one and getting the next persons order.

I know they tried to set up a bottle bar at the other end of the room a few seasons ago, but I never took off as no one was told it was there. How about setting this up again and maybe having a couple of temporary pumps on there.

On the positive side, I like being able to watch SSN or a game if it's on in full and being able to place my bets in there.

Hope that makes sense.

Oh and Lazzer, once you've sorted the pre-match out, could you start the ball rolling on the half-time problems. Perhaps bottles as at Cov instead of pints :icon_wink

It's ok in there, and the smell of bleach had gone when we last went in.

I tend to use the 1884 as I park at the Holiday Inn or the Rowing Club and really can't be bothered to walk for miles to find an alternative. However, the quality of the beer could be improved.

:018: If you are driving in you shouldn't be drinking.
