the new shires has some rubbish shops because its not an attractive outlet, that is the whole point of the new one.

I can't see how the current Shires is any different from any other major shopping centre in the UK apart from the mega places like Bullring, Meadowhall, MK, Trafford Centre.... So if we can't attract anybody to the current than how can they attract for the newer Shires? Because the size is not going to make it the size of these mega-shopping centres.

Anyway we both agree why stop at a Shopping centre.

If you look at Leeds, you see so much development - building going up (very high) everywhere. It's got a lot of money from all the finance business companies though. It's been very canny and attracted shit loads of big big companies.

Now Leicester in my opinion is ideally situated for the same sort of thing. It is smack bang in the middle of England and yet it still isn't growing at anywhere near the rate of other cities.

Does Tim Davies work for the council too?

Why would any bands want to play Leicester. We're all prepared to travel to Birmingham and Nottingham to see gigs. Nottingham now has 3 major venues, all of which are very good. There is no need to play Leicester, we are in the catchment area for other cities

Neither do I, but unfortunately Nottingham has a much bigger draw than Leicester. Sport aside, we are the poorer neighbour

For one it's closer to Sheffield where Robin Hood came from

thats the whole point of the redevelopment. to change that.

No it isn't, the whole point of redevelopment is to better your own surroundings and provide more adequate facilities for the inhabitants whilst remaining attractive to newcomers.

If it's to get one over on Nottingham, then i wouldn't bother

no its to compete with local competitors aswell, which you were saying we couldnt do

A few things on this post. I've taken a bit of interest in the regeneration of Leicester over the past few years for a number of reasons I'm not going to go into.

Firstly, Leicester has had more redevelopment investment over recent years than any other city in the country. There are loads of buildings going up (very high) everywhere in Leicester over the next 2-3 years, the majority of which will extend from Westbridge Wharf to Frog Island with others along Abbey Park.

The idea of the canal/river area between Westbridge and Frog Island is to develop the area into a Brindleyplace/Broad Street Basin style urban village with restaurants, bars, flats, offices etc which having been to Brum to those areas would be great.

This will link in (via the canal & river) with the new Science Park nr the Space Centre and the proposed marina which is going to be developed slightly north of Frog Island.

The Cultural Quarter is centred around the new Theatre (the single largest development of its type in the UK and designed by a world renowned architect) and there is no reason why it couldn't host gigs.

The Pheonix is going to close and be replaced by a new state of the art media centre in the cultural quarter in 2008/2009.

The idea behind the old Exhibition Centre and bottom of Humberstone Gate in general (assuming I am right in saying the old exhibtion centre is down there) is to flatten the whole area and develop a casino and other leisure facilities such as an ice rink on the plot of land. The money for this is being paid for by the casino developer not the council so in effect should this proposal be based by Prescott as part of the Casino Licensing Bill then the council get to redevelop a whole section of a rundown city for free and get the casino to pay for elements that the council want.

Around the Musician, Lee Circle NCP is being demolished and the area to be redeveloped so whether the land is going to be prime office/flats development I'm not sure but I agree it should be moved or replaced by a venue in the Cultural Quarter.

Question - When's the schedule Marina coming on? Because that area needs the facelift now, it's in dire straits.

things dont just happen, theres a time scale for everything, at least the plans are in place to do something about it. i feel like the council or regeneration company get shit id they do and shit if they dont.

Yes I am saying when's the timescale for that project. It's a seperate part of the city, see I can see no probelm with doing that work the same time as others.

It was announced near on 3 years that project and the area is slowly becoming more desolate and a dump.

that doesnt matter because it will be developed, theres that much work going on, you cant just disruot every area of the city. roads need to be taken into account and they may still be in the process of purchasing factories etc off the current owners ready to flatten the ****ers.

the redevelopment isnt flat pack you know, you cant just buy it from ikea and srt it up in a day

Road taken into account...feck me Frog Island was closed off for 18 months.....I know redevelopment is not flat pack. I find it slightly worrying there is no timescale on some of the stuff, almost covering their tracks for when the time comes 'whats happening'. I was not picking an argument on the plans Frog Island Marina, just asking when there is a claimed time/date for work to start.

The only redevlopment I can see in Leicester atm, is Halford Street which is done by the council. The Shires has been delegated to be built by McAlpine.
