I have the internet set up in my flat, however was told by the owners that they change their IP address 7 times a day. So i would have to refresh to continue to use it, as the computer may still try to connect to the old IP addresses.

However even if i dissconnect the network and enable it again, it says the net is connected but doesnt filter through. It tells me messages like DNS could not connect to server microsoft.com.

The way i have got round it so is to reboot my machine however this is a long winded process is there another way around it?

im using vista

im using vista

try this:

in the vista search ( via start button) type 'cmd'
command prompt opens
type 'ipconfig/release'
then 'ipconfig/renew'

should sort your issue each time if you are connecting via a networki.

I would also question why they are doing this, it sounds like an evasion tactic to me

What way do you connect to it? Is it provided free by the landlord?

I am not aware of any need for anyone to change their IP address that often unless they are worried about people detecting it and the traffic (IMO maybe illegal downloads etc) going through it. I may be wrong and there may be a legit reason, I would be interested to hear what though.

I think it maybe with downloads going through to keep the usage down:102:

There is 200 odd flats i believe. I dont think there is anything dodgy going on, they seem legit

If there are lots of users and they want to ensure people arent just leaving torrents etc downloading all day and night it makes sense to reissue IP's to people on the network every few hours.

True, like I said I'm sure there may be a legit reason, I just couldn't think of one. You could. :icon_wink

By an ethernet cable.
No im paying for it.

Where does your ethernet cable connect to? Modem? Router? Socket on the wall?
Who do you pay the money to and what rate is it charged at?

Worrying, isn't it?

But surely the PCs DHCP client would just pick up the new IP address? That's what is confusing me about what Scarby is describing.

Connects to a socket on a wall. They have the ablility to turn the net off and on in a secret locked room.

i pay money to the landlord, about £170 for the year. Pricey it is, i might cancel it if im still having problems.

Did the command prompt instructions work Scarbo?

No, not really nor did restarting the laptop. Only just got it working again, which is annoying as i have work and research to do and im not allowed in the uni comp. labs till next friday.

After i typed in your instructions i got:

Release: The required operation requires elevation
renew: No operation can be performed on wireless network connection while it has no media disconnected.

When i press diaginose it either comes up with
1) There is more than one active network connection on this computer.
----unplug or disable one of the active connections to try and solve the problem

or if that doesnt show up then this one does

2)There may be a problem with your domain name server (DNS) configuration
---- Cannot be repaired automatically.

does that make sense to anyone?
